I wondered why the bloke who was flogging a HP laptop on QVC the other night was blathering on about how committed the company is to remaining a top computer maker.

    The linked article explains it.

    Thanks.

and I'm thinking it looks a bit too good to be true!

    - Intel I3-350m CPU
    - 6GB RAM
    - 17 inch screen

It is a good machine - I got the 500Gb version from them a few months ago for a similarly good price.

The only issue that might influence price is that this model suffers from the slow wireless connection problem that is also common to the G62 model (discussed elsewhere) and after several workrounds and updates, HP have improved the situation but not entirely fixed it. The reason suggested on various tech forums is that the video components/wifi card are interfering and preventing it finding a connection - However, once found, the connection is solid.

The solution I found was to get a little USB wifi adaptor off Ebay and since then, I have had no connection problems at all and am very pleased with my purchase. The adaptor cost £6 incl postage and is small enough to leave parked in a USB socket without risk of damage.

Other than that, the case/colour is a love/hate thing but I get-on fine with it and a little tweaking of the trackpad settings will get it working nicely - although I mainly use it with a cable mouse, the OEM software is well enough thought out and useful (turn off/ditch the HP toolbar/"advisor" stuff fast tho), whilst the built-in speakers are about the best of any budget laptop I've ever owned/worked with - my experience won't be comprehensive there though.

I also found Saveonlaptops very good to deal with and extremely quick to deliver. Since getting the G72,, my old laptop finally gave-up the ghost completely (I'd religated it to entertainment duty) so I bought another cheap laptop from them and again, 100% for service, delivery and information. :)
  • Thanks for all the responses - much appreciated and very helpful.

I'm still looking into whether the laptop has a 4gb RAM max. capacity, so any further thoughts on that would be very helpful.

The same company also has this:

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Samsung_R730_1041049.html

So it's turning into a battle between that and the HP.

Interestingly, the £50 cashback is with Samsung themselves, but when you click through to them the R730 is not listed as a qualifying product... Hmmmm.... scratches chin.....
  • Some interesting developments!

HP are saying that the motherboard would not accept more than 4gb total RAM. However, I suspect that was someone reading from blurvb or prduct description rather than having any major IT expertise! Saveonlaptops have also acknowledged that the motherboard SAYS it has a 4gb limit, but they are saying they have sold hundreds of them with 6gb installed (one 4gb module, one 2gb) and that the laptop recognises it no problem and uses al of the RAM.

Can anyone recommend a good website where I can ask which of these is true and find out once and for all?

I called saveonlaptops to discuss this, they said something along the lines of "Samsung have been really slack lately and not updated the list. But don't worry, once you've bought it and gone through the online process on the Samsung website you will see that the laptop is included in the cashback deal even if it's not listed". He was very confident about this.

However, I have also been speaking to Samsung directly about it - who are not best pleased about one of their resellers describe them as "slack"!!! Furthermore, he assures me that the list IS up to date and that the laptop would therefore no be eligible for the offer.

I'm digging further and will continue to up date as things progress.

i can't see what hp have to gain by saying their system will only support up to 4gb or ram if it supports more - if anything it would reduce sales!
