    or Contract

    12, 18 , or 24 month contract?

It is widely anticipated that it will be announced late September and released in October.

How do you mean 'does it make much difference'? If you are referring to the price of the current iPhone 4, again it is anticipated that the spec on the 4 will be reduced (i.e. less memory) and that will be slightly cheaper than it is now.

Personally I'd wait, see what the launch of the 5 does to the 4. It is not as if it will make the 4 more expensive, is it?

No. If you need an iPhone - buy it now. I never buy on contract, so costs at launch will always be high and never discounted due to supply and demand. The 4 has been out for longer than the others (so far) and is a superb instrument. I recommend if you plan to keep upgrading, you;d want to upgrade the 5 when the 6 comes out, so by not syncronising with each launch, you save money - a bit like buying a car before the new registrations come out.

Personally I'd wait until the iPhone 5. The launch is generally expected to be on or before the 14th of October (Still unannounced, so this could change), but on every other iPhone launch the previous model has dropped in price. Even if you don't want the new one it'll probably be cheaper to hold out another couple of months and get the iPhone 4 cheaper then!

But if he waits now and buys the 5 at launch he will not be disappointed just 1 month after purchasing his new handset. Whatever, anyway... unless you can upgrade each year, there is always going to be a newer Apple product to spend your money on.

    Yes and no.

Going on all prior iPhone releases..
When Iphone 5 is released the 4 as is now (16/32GB) models will be withdrawn and a smaller one (probably 8gb) take it's place. There will be a price reduction but the spec will be lower too.

This sounds like sound advice. Thank you. I had a hunch this was the case but good to get it confirmed. I think there's a lot of people going round saying you have to have the latest version but to be honest unless you're a real gadget freak - which I'm not - then you probably won't notice the difference (unless you're a long way behind in terms of version numbers).
