  • Sorry Pincher you lost me a bit!

Macman .... Ok so I need the PVR (like the Humax) ... The TV depends on budget... Would really like to keep to £1k overall ( the Humax is around 200 plus I think) looking for about 37" as not a massive room and happy for someone to suggest options - Do I need to get HD or would it just be HD ready... If these are basic Qs really sorry guys

With a 32" set you will not be able to see the difference between Full HD and HD Ready. For a 37" you may. The price difference is not great these days.
You can get a premium brand 37" TVand a Hummy well within your budget.
First thing to do is to measure up the viewing distance and work out the required screen size.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You will have to budget for dish if you haven’t got one already. John Lewis have 37inch TVs for £600 or less (Sony/Panasonic) which include 5-year guarantee.

You can connected the humax box to your old TV using a scart socked if you didn’t want a new TV.
  • Thanks Macman

Have been looking at Humax boxes ... Amazon have various ones is there any in particular you would rec ...
Humas HDR 500GB HD Sat £226 is the one I have found that looks ok
Can you tell me the extras I need to buy as well, I plan to buy on the web and then get someone local to put me a dish up and set up
Would be grateful for suggestions on TV make etc
Many thanks your help is appreciated

Can’t really comment on TV the models change so quickly. I have a Panasonic with built in freesat HD and I’m very happy with it. My mother has a Sony with built in HD freeview it was the entry level full HD ready TV a year or so ago and she is very happy with that. If you can get into John Lewis they are very helpful, I’m not sure buying blind off Internet without seeing it is the best way to buy a TV. I see richer sound has that TV for that price and they are recommended on here quite a bit.

I would also recommend Richer Sounds or John Lewis. The latter certainly give a good guarantee. Both shops are usually happy to give demonstrations, provided that you don't turn up at a busy time.

There are some basic notes about buying a TV here:

Before spending any money, make sure you have a location where a dish can be installed and be able to "see" the relevant satellite (Astra-2).
  • Thanks... I have decided to get the Humax and have it installed with my TV for now... I cannot get into a John Lewis but we do have a Richer store in York which is not too far away and I agree it seems better to go and see them. I know more anyway thanks to you all.
