Pull ups

I have just started using Pampers pull ups with my DS (who will be 2 in a fortnight ) and am finding they leak terribly. I remember using them with my older 2 children and don't recall these issues. Up until now DS has been in washable nappies and has easily gone 3-4 hours between change with no problems so I don't think he is a particularly heavy wetter.

The reason for the change is that I recently discovered I am pregnant again and as my OH has never been a fan of washables, in a weak moment I agreed we would make the switch to disposables. I don't think he is quite ready to toilet train yet, but thought pull ups could be the start of that process in that he could learn to pull them on and off himself and in a few months hopefully make a start on trying with a potty and some pants.

Has anyone else had this problem with Pampers and are there better brands out there which would be worth trying? DS is tall and skinny in case body shape makes a difference and I am using size 4 pull ups which are certainly not tight around the waist though I wouldn't have said they were so loose as to cause leaks.

I would use it as an experience and say to OH this is why you use washables.. if he isnt used to changing nappies by now you have been far too lenient the last 2 years!!!

How is he only in size 4? they are probably too small.. my girly is in size 5 at a year!!.. So you could try a bigger size.. or a different brand. tbh I find pullups rubbish.. my sis did too..

Definitely not too small. He is a real skinny Minnie my little one! In fairness to OH he does do his fair share of nappy changes, which is how he knows he prefers disposables to washables. He much prefers just to wrap it up and bin it, rather than washing a dirty one through before putting it in the nappy bin. DS goes for the explosive poos, so liners don't always come up to the job :D
  • Have you still got your proper wraps? Could you put one over the top... I love Pigpen's way though: "this is why proper nappies are better...." :D

I used to have exactly the same issue with them and it's why I went back to using disposable nappies at night-time. Mine weren't getting up in the night to have a wee anyway - they still don't, so there was no reason for pull-ups, which used to be more expensive. Don't know if they still are? DS was dry at night at 3 years 9 months, but dry in day at 2 years 5 months, and DD was dry both day and night about 6 weeks before her 3rd birthday.
  • We have the same problem with pull ups too, although weirdly I found Tesco's own brand leaked less than Pampers. I tend to only use them in the day and use normal nappies at night.

  • Congratulations Nicki!

My little one is 21 months and still uses a size 4 Pampers. He is a skinny one too <3

To be fair, we don't ever have any leaks so maybe your LO is a heavier wetter than you realise. Or maybe, a different brand would suit better but we have only ever used Pampers so I can't recommend anything sorry.

Anyway, good luck and congratulations :D

    First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You probably need to go up a size for pull ups, they are not as absorbant as the regular nappies. I wouldn't use them at night at all.

When DS2 was in pull ups I found asda and tesco own brands to be a lot better than pampers and huggies.

Personally, I'd go back to nappies if he is not ready for toilet training and use pull ups when he is ready, so that when the time comes there is a clear difference between nappy and pull up.

My skinny boy just piddled out of the side of pull ups at night. We stuck to disposable nappies until he was dry after a few pull up failures.

I've been using Tesco own-brand pull-ups because they're half the price of Pampers/Huggies etc - and they seem fine. If you have problems at night then I'd go back to using a baby-dry, keeping the pull-ups for day-time.

My younger son was just over 2 when we started toilet training and we found the pampers pull ups totally useless as the smallest size gaped at both the waist and the legs which meant that they did nothing. We switched to huggies pull up nappies in size 4 and as he got used to the idea switched to the pull up pants in the smallest size which were a bit big on him but did the job as by this point we wre mostly making it to the toilet on time. He is by no means a small child just a bit on the slender side but size 4s were the biggest nappy that he ever wore as the next size up was just too big.
