Will they check....

I want to get a new Current Account but am having difficulties as my credit rating is shot to pieces!! I am stuck with my Halifax acct - which is the most basic one I can get - Visa Electron - and virtually no interest....

So I want to get therefore the best current acct available - I will look on the various threads posted on this but what I want to ask is...

All my bad credit is linked with my London address - and not with my one back home in N. Ireland. Would I be able to apply for an account and use my home address and assume they would not be able to / or try to link it with over here? I am not trying to be dishonest and get an overdraft or anything just want a 'real' current acct?

Anyone have any clue please?

Thanks

Hi donmonster, it may not work, because ultimately you will have to provide the London banks with your local London address, and that would end up pointing back at your London credit file.

True ... but by then, he will already have the account open.

DonMonster ... more worrying is that you have to lie on the application form in order to get them to credit check you using your NI address. And are you on the electoral role at your NI address?

Why not go for a basic account to start with and then ask for an upgrade based on good conduct. IIRC, HSBC will upgrade on conduct and consider requests after you've had the basic account for 6 months.

debt_free_chick, current account applications are done in real time (appointment usually required), so they'll score you there and then. I know this because they'll tell you on the very spot if you're successful or not and the search comes on my credit file the very same day. Cheers!

Confused .... how does this affect the OP or my reply?

I think DonMonster was intending to apply using his NI address. If he's on the electoral roll and has a clean credit record at that address then he'll get an account.

He then tells the bank of his London address ... they won't credit check him again.

    Have I missed something?

Debt_Free_Chick, proof of a London address is required to open any bank account in London and believe it or not some banks won't even let you open a bank account if it's not in your local.

So if donmonster was to give a London address, it may end up pointing back to his/her not-so-pretty credit file and that's not the goal here since that will not help in an application for a current account. And an alternate or new London address was supplied then the chances of getting a current account would be equally unlikely since there would be no credit history if it doesn't already point back at the existing one. Cheers!

I'm also sure that you're aware that a current account is much harder to get than a basic bank account for somebody who is new or has no financial records in London.

But he says he has an address back in NI too?

What's not clear is if this is an old address he no longer occupies, or whether he still "owns" or returns to that address.

Have to admit that I thought he could prove his NI address. If so, open current account with big bank in NI. Wait a while, then notify new address as London and have Big Bank switch the account to a London branch.

Looks like we're on different lines here and I'm not sure what the Monster has done ... still, hopefully he'll post back and hopefully it's not deception ;)

Just my opinion (and part of the training given to me as an account opener) if a new customer comes into my branch to open an account but gives an address away I would not open that account. I would tell them straight away that they either change their address to the new locality and bring in proof: or open the account at a bank/branch near to their 'address'.
If you are applying to an Internet bank then you just might get away with it but eventually you will be caught out IMO.
