BT mastersocket

Hi all

I am trying to get SKY to allow me faster broadband - at the moment, I get 0.5mbs, when they claim I can have 1.5mbs (well below the apparent 20mbs my package will allow)- anyway, they are making me jump through hoops and I have to ensure the router is in the Mastersocket - we are in a 3 bed semi, only 2 sockets - 1 in box room and one in living room - how do I know which is MS?

Thanks

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Car Insurance Carver!
A master socket is normally an NTE5 and looks like THIS (note the split just under halfway down).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks - sadly, neither look like that, just small normal phone sockets that I can see
  • Our master socket is in the loft.

Have a look where your phone line comes into the house (if its an overhead line) your master socket will be within a few meters of that (probably)

    Open up the socket,if it looks like this;

    LJU2-1A.jpg

    Then it's a mini master,or LJU 2/3.They were fitted before the NTE5's.
  • Is it possible to have 2 mini masters? I have opened up both boxes - both look pretty much the same as the above photo!

We have checked the lines coming in, the closest to the wire is the box room upstairs - we always thought this was an extension! Nothing in the loft that we can see.

If I move the router upstairs, the wifi signal to the PC ( in the conserv) is very weak.

At the moment, I am getting OK signal, just very slow and watching Skygo is a nogo!

Ahh! The bottleneck may be your wireless. Check out the speed with a wired connection, before you go too much further.

Yes it is,where the cable is split off to two points in the house. It's an old way of wiring up,much simpler than back-wiring the ringer wire off to an extension.
  • Thanks DVardysShadow - The problem is, the placement of our normal PC (in the conservatory) is due to space issues - we have no where else to put the thing. It used to be in the box room, but this is now being used for other things. So, its nowhere near a phone point, hence I cant get it wired up - well, I could but the wires around the house would be like spag junction! So I am relying on wifi to get connected.
  • Spike - looking at the wiring off the side of the house, this appears to be what they have done. Does this mean that either socket can be classed as the master?

Basically yes.Although I'd try to get BT out thru Sky to replace it with a NTE5.
