I'd second offering water or juice from cups rather than bottles, juice from bottles is a habit that is bad for their teeth, I don't know how old your GS is but my Squeak has some Nuby cups which are very good. She did figure out though that she can turn the 9m+ one upside down and poke her finger up the spout it will run everywhere... we had a few occasions with puddles in the buggy before the novelty wore off.

  • I agree with the other posters about offering it in a cup - make it seem different to the milk drink. It worked for us - although in the beginning I'm sure we went through about 6 different types of cup before we found one DD liked!

I can recommend doidy cups. You can get them from amazon.

My DD wouldn't take to sippy cups but is brilliant with these
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.

thanks everyone, some brilliant advice there. I will suggest the cup for water/juice, maybe he needs to know that it's not going to be milk when he gets the cup.

The syringe is a good idea too. The health visitor says he will need laxatives if he remains so constipated, so obviously that's to be avoided if possible.

It is not advised to give juice in a bottle as it is washed around teeth and not good for them... a HV should know that and not be advocating it! Acidic drinks like orange, blackcurrant, lemon may cause him to have a sore bottom or acidic urine so might be best avoided too.. squash or fresh juice!

Some beakers now have silicon spouts which my LO really likes.. she struggled with hard spouts. I would definitely be giving it in a beaker so he knows the difference. Sometimes it is trial and error as to which type of beaker they will take but he is old enough to manage it himself.

A couple of mine would take cooled fennel or camomile tea.. which was gentle on the tummy.

Also.. if he usually has his milk warm he may not like cold juice/water so warming it a little might help.

You could always try ice lollies or ice pops. This is the advice I was given for if a baby has diarrhoea and/or vomiting and is refusing fluids.

My squeak is nuts... she always liked her milk warm but juice straight from the fridge. She will also drink cows milk from the fridge now but not at bedtime, apparently bedtime milk has to be hot!

Zaksmum it's just a question of finding out what works for him, it'll be OK in the end :)

    Doidy cups.
Bottle & cups with spouts are no good for teeth or jaw development, so use as little as possible anyway.

Give the doidy cup empty first time, to play with. the try giving a drink when in the bath, then when about to be changed, so you don't have to deal with too many drips. Then wrap a tea toel under the chin. Let baby take & handle the cup, carer just steadies it.

a sippy cup or simply a cup! the babies bottle should be for milk and only milk IMHO. other drinks can be offered from a sippy cup, a cup or a carton with a straw. many babies wont accept other drinks from 'Thier' bottle. but are happy to drink juice etc from other containers.
