OP, were you made redundant from your last job? If so you may be eligble for funding through something called response to redundancy scheme, but you will need to act quickly as requests for this funding need to be made within 13 weeks of the redundancy?

If this is the case you need to make an appointment with a JSA adviser a.s.a.p to get the ball rolling.

Just to add my experience as a haulier/employer - I don't advertise jobs because we get too many replies to go through when an advert gets placed for a HGV driver. It does vary from area to area and as usual the South has less applicants than the North. I only employ UK drivers as well.

i do think that if you manage to find work soon after you pass your C+E then you will be in the minority, but then someone has to be! Restrictions from insurance companies can make it difficult to employ a newbie. Usually they ask for additional excess in the event of an accident.

  • DWP do FLT course if you attend a compulsory maths course as it is some loophole to get funding.
  • not true - can be done within the Driving Goods Vehicles Apprenticeship and potentially within the Sector Based Work Academy (formerly known as PreEmployment Training). Funding doesnt come from the DWP, it is from the provider's (College) Single ADult Skills budget of which a proportion should be used for these types of training schemes.

The Driving Goods Vehicle (DGV) Apprenticeship is for young people aged 16-24 interested in a career driving lorries over 7.5 tonnes, transporting and delivering goods between suppliers and customers.
Hardly any companies signed up for it due to the aggro and the ones that do use it to get cheap warehouse labour whilst the budding driver spends years working in one as the company concerned cannot get insurance.
  • WRONG WRONG WRONG! On so many levels. There is NO upper age limit for an apprenticeship. Many companies have employed people on an apprenticeship, not sure of the aggro you talk of, none of the companies I deal with have reported any problems. If they want warehouse labour, they can put them on the Warehousing & Storage Apprenticeship and this type of work will not give the evidence required to complete the course.

    Learning Outcomes

The DGV Apprenticeship provides candidates with the skills required to drive a Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) alongside Skills for Life such as Maths and English that will assist them in everyday life.
  • And where is that from?
  • 100% funding is available for 16-18 year olds.

For apprentices aged 19 years and over, an employer contribution of 50% is expected towards the costs of training
  • I am aware of the funding for providers, I am one. Expected is the key word, for under 25s there is usually only a minimal fee of around £1-300 for the training which can be worth about £4k
