Wondering if anyone has any knowledge of an "out and about" mobile phone charger, so that a phone can be charged without being near a socket or a car charger point?

Depends what you want, there are a big choice of solar chargers and battery emergency chargers on the market both of which do what you want.

I just sold a couple of them on ebay - Duracell rechargeable units that have a USB socket to charge a phone/iPod/etc.; you charge up the box (smaller than a phone) and take it out with you, along with a cable if the builtin plug isn't the right one, and then when your phone runs out you plug it in abd recharge it.

Ah, brilliant. Thank you so much. I couldn't think what to search for, as "mobile phone charger" obviously was just bringing up the ones you plug into the socket or the car.

Will investigate the links you've kindly provided.

I want to be prepared for next year's festival season, as needless to say, out of 25 19-21 year olds, not one had any charge left in their phone after two days away from home!

You can even get a torch with the wind up charger.

I've got one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Trent-Dual-port-IMP50D-Blackberry/dp/B004AM1OK4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314645293&sr=8-1
It's really good :) Small enough to carry around, I can have 2 gadgets feeding off it simultaneously (a bit obvious given the name!) and 5000mAh means that's there's enough capacity to provide several charges.

Must be referring to the battery which is sealed inside the unit, definitely badly worded! What it doesn't come with is the AC charger, which is stated if I remember correctly. This is fine with me as I have lots of spares lying around (it uses a mini USB connector) and it can obviously also be charged from a computer using a USB lead but this takes longer due to the power draw limitations of computer ports.

Edit: the main thing to remember with all external packs is that they do take a long time to charge (and obviously the higher the capacity, the longer the charge time) so don't wait until the last minute to charge them up!

I have tried several AA battery powered emergency chargers to keep my HTC desire going for a weekend camping. 1, 2 and even a 4 cell one. They don`t work properly with rechargeable batteries and even with alkaline cells only manage a tiny top up on a smartphone before the voltage drops too low to continue charging.

I too have ended up with the 5000Ma New Trent battery pack mentioned above, this works and will charge the phone up to 100% a couple of times during a weekend with a little left over for a top up.
