Comments on our new kitchen layout please...

Hello all.
Can you please give us some advice on our proposed kitchen layout? We have been watching this forum over the past few months whilst we have been planning our kitchen extension & have picked up some great tips. We think we have come up with a workable layout, but would welcome your comments. Our local kitchen supplier only uses paper & pencil so we haven’t had any of the fancy modelling that is possible from some of the kitchen places. Meepster, any chance of working your magic?

Hopefully you can see my sketch plan that I’ve knocked up on Google Sketchup. As you can see we are going to end up with an L shaped kitchen, diner & family room. The kitchen is going to be in a U shaped arrangement with a breakfast bar at the open end. At the other side of the dining table we are looking to create a dresser style display unit in the same cabinets as the kitchen. One option we do have is possibly moving the dresser unit to the short wall marked with an *. So would like to hear your comments on that.
The cabinets we are currently looking at are a painted shaker design in a very light cream/bone white finish with stainless steel handles. For the worktops we are going for one of the dark grey granites with a metallic blue fleck. The appliances are all built in Neff stainless steel finish apart from the Liebherr free standing oversize fridge.

Thanks for your help in anticipation. Any comments/suggestions welcome.

Cheers Mr & Mrs Madcow

Right, I've mocked up some 3D visuals of what your proposed layout looks like, which I'll uploaed this evening for you. I've had to leave out the 500mm base unit between the 930mm corner base and the oven housing though, as for some reason it just doesn't fit, it pushes the units too far over.

Being brutally honest though, I don't like the layout. I think it's something to do with the tall units coming over the edge of the wall, not sure if would look better if a false wall was put in behind them.

I don't like the 500mm drawer pack at the side of the sink either, it's lacking symmetry and looks a little like an afterthought?

I would put the dresser onto the other wall though, it gives more room around the table and it wont feel as cramped...

I do see what you are trying to do, so I'll have a play about with it and see what I can come up with!

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Oh and is there any chance you can let me know the height of the room?

I'm at work at the moment, so I cannot measure the ceiling height, it is a modern house (10 years old) so I think about 2.4m, but I will confirm tonight.

The wall behind the tall units is a stud partition wall & will be extended out to the end of the larder unit.

    Thanks for your help.

ooh, lucky you - getting meepster to do a plan for you.

My immediate reaction is I don't like the breakfast bar! Is there really a need for it when you have a table right next to it - how much space is there to walk past if someone is sat at the breakfast bar and someone else sat at the table? I would scrap the breakfast bar bit (can still have the L shape to the units if really necessary but I wouldn't have it sticking out any further than the wall.

I think the "dresser" would be better on the * wall and then turn the table 90 degrees. You'll then have plenty of space to get round the table leaving more area for the "family room" bit.

I'm with meepster on the tall units that aren't in front of a wall - for one how would you secure them? I see you have a utility room, wouldn't it be better to ensure that you have more cupboards in there for the rarely used stuff we fill our kitchens with and keep the units in the kitchen within the bounds of the kitchen walls.

Your design is very similar to our new kitchen.

We did away with the breakfast bar and just had a semicircle end at that point, but your kitchen floor space is slightly wider than ours.

Is your table a bit small?

If it was me I think I would be tempted to move your fridge slightly towards the sink.

Why not have a range cooker? We chose the Rangemaster Elan 110 Induction.

Ok, so here's what you current plan looks like:

I had a rather busy day, so I didn't exactly dress it up etc. but you get the idea

And here's the plan and one pic of what I would do, will have to upload the other view tomorrow, image is corrupt for some reason :(

I have to admit, I do like the breakfast bar section, I think it just adds a little something to the kitchen.

With regards to the height of the kitchen, exactly what height units are you being quoted for? The reason I ask is that the fridge freezer you have mentioned is 2020mm high. Standard height units tend to be around 2100mm high, with extra high going up to around 2400. You'd need to make sure you can get units that will still sit below the ceiling and enable you to get the wine rack above the f/f...

Thanks all for your comments. Meepster, those 3D images are great. Sorry I threw you all with my original sketch showing the units protruding past the utility wall with no partition wall behind.

You have given us some points to think about. I'll put some tweaks together & repost my thoughts.

    Cheers & thanks again Madcow

Heh it's ok, it makes more sense now though. You'll just have to imagine the false wall behind the larder unit :D
