Fair. Where do Oyster and fair come into anything. How about being able to check your usage online? I dont believe you can do that. How many people are gettin overcharged without realising it or not being bothered to spend time disputing it.
As far as the top up goes it looks as if there are quite a few restrictions, for example you have to nominate a station and activate your card at that station within a certain amount of days. So what if you use different patterns of travelling?

Old Gold - the 'nominated station' thing only applies if you use the non-Auto top up. Then you say 'i want to top up £10' and yes you have to choose a station to pick it up at. The auto top-up tops you up at any oyster ticket barrier - wherever you are when you swipe Oyster and you go below £5, it initiates the transfer of topup from your bank to the oyster card. Next time you swipe, you see the new amount (if you're going through a barrier which shows the balance). I believe you can even auto top-up on a bus now which is useful.

Just remember that it could take you overdrawn in theory I think, so be careful. Best to cancel it after getting the £5 if you live life near your o/d limit.

I signed up for auto top-up last year when they did a free £10!
  • Thanks for this

I have an Oyster which I hardly use, but blow me if i'm gonna pay £4 instead of £1

    :D

How about being able to check your usage online?

According to the site with Oyster online

    * A quick and easy way to top up your Oyster card and/or renew your Travelcard
    * Once you set up your account, there is no need to complete an online form with every purchase
    * Your Oyster card will be protected against loss or theft
    * You can view your pay as you go journey history
    * You will receive email updates on planned disruptions to your regular route

So if you can view your journey history then isn't that the same as checking your usage?

Credit never expires but card gets frozen after 2 years non-use - you need to contact them to reactivate/get a refund.
