i no i was silly but i just thought that if i spoke to them that they would advise me and everyone else i spoke to has said that if i spoke to them they would of explained that we wouldnt be covered unless we posted. so i just assumed that by ringing them they would advise me correctly didnt realise that all this could happen. i have learned a very big lesson just a little to late and yes i do feel very very silly.

The thing is with scum like this unless you know all the rules or read up & digest all the ins & outs of ebay it's very easy to be taken in.
The pity is that you wasted money on phoning paypal when you could have got the advice on here to keep your money safe.
I do hope that you get this sorted out.
  • i feel very sorry for you, but it's a lesson learnt, you probably won't see the cash or man again, best thing to do is make the police chase the guy through ebay/paypal etc, if they got on the company's backs, they could get the guy's ISP, then if they contact the ISP, they will be able to let you know who he is, I'd try doing some home research, google his email address, full name, nickname on ebay, find out everything you can about him. Good luck and sorry to hear

Thing is, Ebay own Paypal. Paypal can and will involve debt collectors. You cannot simply close your paypal account then open a new one as the debt is linked to your address. Neither can you use someone else's account because as soon as you link your bank details to it, Paypal will be onto both you and the other account holder.

You need to get your oh to obtain a copy of the cctv disc before it is deleted. Then, take this along with any other evidence, to a Police station.

If you want to continue selling on Ebay your only option is to find a good friend who doesn't have an account already, then get them to set up an ebay/paypal account. You will of course have to go round their house to list your items as Ebay link IPaddresses to accounts, but as long as your name does not appear on any bank accounts or postage, then you should get away with it.

For £800, I would take my chances in court, that is if they ever actually take anyone to court, the golden urban myth says they do, but nobody has ever seen it .
I would think you would be very hard pressed to find any district judge to uphold the claim from paypal when the star witness fails to show, as he would need to when you counter claim paypals losses from him , they would have to put down some serious evidence that what the crook is claiming to have happened actually did and given the testimony of two good character witnesses and possible statement from the other victim, I would put a good wager the judge would turn around and say, more fool paypal.

thanks for that i really dnt think we have much of a case because we have no proof well apart from cctv from my partners works hopefully where he collected the last 2. he was a weird character 2. he couldnt catch the number plate of the car because he wizzed off before we had chance and when he came to my partners work he came out of no where so my partner didnt see then either. my partner may be going looking for him tommorrow not to kick his head in ( although thats what he needs) but just to say we want it sorted now. either give us the cash or we want the laptops back. see where he gets with that. hes taking someone from work whos bigger than him and looks kinda scary haha so hopefully that will move him along and make him see that were not a joke and he cant take the p with us.

If he clicked the buy it now button to purchase one of your laptops why don't you ring Ebay explain to them what has happened and ask them for his contact details because of the data protection act I doubt that they will give you his address but they will give it to the police, his address will be registered with ebay unless he has given them a false one, he's probably done this many times, get a copy of the cctv to the police asap and file a report with them, I take it the guy lives local? Did he file a INR dispute in order to get the money back from paypal? I'm not really sure what happened here.
OH and never ever agree to collection always post with courier or special delivery, I always try to insist on cash if a collection is asked for.
I am really sorry you have had this happen to you and I do hope you can retrieve the laptops or get your money. :(

OP. you can search his email address on facebook, too. That might help you find the one you're looking for.

You've been unlucky. It did cross my mind to buy two but in the end I only got the one which I now use. You weren't silly but very very unfortunate to get scammed. Hard to believe there are such horrid people about.
