If he clicked the buy it now button to purchase one of your laptops why don't you ring Ebay explain to them what has happened and ask them for his contact details because of the data protection act I doubt that they will give you his address but they will give it to the police, his address will be registered with ebay unless he has given them a false one, he's probably done this many times, get a copy of the cctv to the police asap and file a report with them, I take it the guy lives local? Did he file a INR dispute in order to get the money back from paypal? I'm not really sure what happened here.
OH and never ever agree to collection always post with courier or special delivery, I always try to insist on cash if a collection is asked for.
I am really sorry you have had this happen to you and I do hope you can retrieve the laptops or get your money. :(

thanks i have 3 different addresses for him and 2 contact numbers. his mobile has been off all day and his landline is apparently the wrong number but were pretty sure its his number as the person that answered didnt seemed shocked at all. aaaa how annoying grrrr seriously wish i had thought a bit more before doing anything or better still not tried to make money and just struggled along coz im in a worse position now than i was before....oh flip i've seriously learnt and just want to punch myself lol

You've been unlucky. It did cross my mind to buy two but in the end I only got the one which I now use. You weren't silly but very very unfortunate to get scammed. Hard to believe there are such horrid people about.

i no it was so tempting because it was clearly a very good offer and i just thought well why not i needed the money and thought that this is the only way because neither me or my partner cant work any more hours and were trying our best and this is what happens to us. my 3 year old son wanted to get a wacking stick and whack him in the face :)

Have you withdrawn the money from paypal to your bank ?
if so, close the direct debit with the bank ASAP ! and let paypal whistle.
They dont do court, as they would loose and open the floodgates.
Paypal need to be taught a few good hard lessons in streetwise common sense.
If Paypal are stupid enough to let a scammer run all over them, then good for paypal.
So if you have the money, Paypal gave him a refund without speaking to you, then let it be paypals problem.

It will be sent to debt collection.

Have you given these addresses to the police yet? he's not going to answer the phone, how did you get the addresses and tel numbers?
I bet 99% of us on this forum have been ripped off via Ebay at some time or another, you are not the first, my hubby and I bought a caravan a few years ago for £2200 paid cash for it, brought it home tried to insure it and found out that it had been stolen years ago, we were gutted, we ended up buying the caravan again from the insurance company for £600, we renovated it then resold it for £2800 so just about got our money back, boy did we learn our lesson, a couple of months later we bought another caravan off Ebay but this time we paid £9.99 to have it checked out to see if it was HPI clear and not on the stolen register, fortunately the guy was a genuine seller and we got a bargain, still using our caravan to this day so I know how daft you must be feeling cos I have been there but keep your chin up you never know things might just work out..... keep us all informed on how things go.

  • What a nasty man :( Im really sorry someone has done it not only once but repeatedly. Please do not listen to the 'ignore Paypal' advice, I guarantee you that removing you DD details, closing your eBay & Paypal accounts will NOT make it go away. I've done it & I even moved miles away & they WILL find you, especially for the amount of your case - mine was for £97 & they didn't let it drop. It was an ex's debt (accounts were mine) & it was only when they turned up at my parents house where I'd moved back to that I paid it & took it up with the ex later. It wasn't nice, please don't hope they'll forget about it & write it off, it'll only cause you more stress. I hope your partner catches up with him but how do you know where to go? Best of luck :)

I agree contact the bank and tell them the account may have been compromised and change the bank account
to make sure paypal do not take the money.

Yes you will get letters from debt collectors but just tell them the debt is in dispute. As mentioned above they would
have to take you to court for the money.
And they will need to provide proof that you owe it.

How are they going to do that? As already said i doubt the buyer will be standing as a witness for them.

Stand your ground, Insist they ONLY contact you in writing.

Have a look at the debt boards, Even when people owe genuine provable debts its not as easy as the
    debt collectors make out.

They cannot come into your home and take goods unless they take you to ourt and you lose then
fail to keep up repayments agreed by the court.

Checkout the debt boards. And keep all correspondence they send. Refuse to discuss on the phone and
ALWAYS state the alledged debt is in dispute.

  • i have no idea. were searching 118, 192, google, facebook, twitter. but when my partner was having a general chat with him when he came to pick up the laptops he was talking about people he knew and we have found out my partners mate knows these people well and he sold a car to one of them so hopefully we will get a true address then we will just turn up on his door step and see what hes got to say for himself. he seems a gimp anyway so hopefully he'll be found out by silly things that he has said or done. he needs to be sorted out once and for all so he doesnt pull this stunt again. he sold tickets to another guy on ebay but never had them to send and this morning he rung the guy and asked him if he enjoyed the show and then rung him back again and said you've been conned and said he hi-jacked the account but its all lies so were trying to link them so its more evidence for the police

Maybe advisable to find him asap as he will not have these laptops for long infact he may have already passed them on, don't sit on this, he sounds a bit of a plonker to be honest, if he is well known for doing this kind of thing he'll get his comeuppence.
Bank holiday today so he may be at home? Just a thought, not everyone goes out for the day!!!
    Hope you get some sucess.

I think your estimate is way too high. Whilst it is true you generally only hear about the scams and rip offs on here, it doesn't mean that 99% have been ripped off. There are lots of basic queries on all sorts of things.

You've been reading to many forums. I've been on ebay since 2000 as a buyer and a seller. Never been ripped off. I know numerous people who buy frequently on ebay don't know one who has been ripped off.
