    Yes been serviced 3 times.

vax2002: Will certainly think twice about buying another Vauxhall. Probably go for a Volvo.

Frank Force: Been thinking the same thing.

    Thanks to All

should have had 4 services by now at 4.5 years old?

IMO, mileage is irrelevant - after 4.5 years, the manufacturer probably doesn't have to do much, if anything, particularly as you appear to have missed a service? The warranty is based on time or mileage, whichever comes first.Don't forget, the car is still subject to extremes of temperature, damp, condesnation etc, even when parked up. You may not agree, but at some point you have to take responsibility for owning the car and paying for it's upkeep

Keep trying Vauxhall as you may get lucky, but I think you've done ok at that age

I had a similar problem with a fiesta I bought - 18 months old 4,000 miles and it needed a new engine.
Unfortunately even though i pestered and pestered, I never got a penny towards it from Fords.
I enven got myself a solicitor and still couldn't get anything from them.

I thought all Fords carried a 3 year warranty - mine did.
Had yours been serviced iaw Ford's schedule, etc...............?

My DD had problems with her Ka, both the dealer and Fords were top notch - they even replaced an item which wasn't covered by the 3 year warranty as well as sorting the original problem - and lending her a brand new Fiesta in the meantime.

Half of the cost seems fair to me , they could have offered nothing.

Op has benefitted from about 3/4 of the expected life span of the part... since I brand new part will be installed, is it not fair op should pay a figure that fairly represents the use to-date?

To look at it another way, if it did last the extra 3,000 miles op would have had to pay parts & labour so has likely saved money in the long run......

Think you may have misread my post.
10,000 miles is the allowance for 1st year before service.

Our 4 year old Vauxhall Astra has allowance of 40,000.
So the fact that it has done only 17.25% of that mileage is neither here nor there & fit for purpose isn't worth jot in this instance.

Thanks to all for your replies !

    Ah I see.

So what mileage/how many years is this particular part expected to last ?

I disagree though... I do think it is fair to consider the use to-date with the remedy. If it was a part that you would never expect to replace throughout it's life then it may be different.

If you did though insist on a free repair/replacement they would have likely installed a refurbished/used part -- which would be like for like.

50% seems fair given the cars age
to me mileage is irrelevant given the nature of the part
a lot of things could happen to a car in 4 years of ownership.mileage isnt an 100% indicator of use or wear

Although our car is almost four and a half years old it has done less than 6,900 miles. This very much lower than the advised 10,000 first year service mileage limit Unfortunately, last week it developed a fault.
The ABS indicator light came on and the speedometer did not operate.
The dealer informed us the control box had packed up & we needed a replacement.
As the car had such low mileage they contacted Vauxhall to see what they would offer Re: replacement.
Vauxhall offered to pay half cost of part & labour.
I wrote to Vauxhall (after paying our half to the dealer) suggesting since mileage was so low, (69% of 1st years mileage limit) obviously there had been a fault in control box. May have been something simple, such as dry solder joint but a fault nonetheless.
Got reply saying more or less - tough.

Can anybody advise on steps I could take now ?

    Thanks in Advance

I think you got a decent deal from them. The car was out of warranty and wear on the part is not mlieage specific.

    Something doesn't sound right there.
Would love to know more details (what was wrong with the engine, how far the solicitor got in the legal process and why he stopped, the replies from Ford, etc).

Why was it not repaired under warraanty?
