I thought Kim and Aggie were innovative when it comes to cleaning tips, but in this book it's suggested to use biological powder to clean a scummy bath. They're not so clever as I first thought. ;)

Oh yes they are ... they've made an absolute fortune from time honoured OS tips!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

"Someone" must have been the original inventor of most of the tips that have been passed down over the generations but we'll never know who they really were ;)

My book arrived a couple of days ago. The first few sections are especially great... I wish there was something as good as this but in a more modern context so I could give it to my DSD.

I thought the picture of the butcher was a bit scary personally!

I chuckled over the paragraphs about the dishwasher being a luxury. I'd give up my TV before Igave up the dishwasher!

The law and finance bits was the only section that was hopelessly out of date.

What an excellent book. Thank you so much for recommending it!
  • I just got my copy today in the post - I got it off Amazon but had to pay £7 inlcuding delivery for it, but the upside is that it is a first edition, edited by Neil Tennant and it is in PRISTINE condition - not even gone yellow on the edge of the pages - looks like whoever bought it just put it in a drawer or something and never even opened it! Thanks for the tip on this book - I remember my Mum having it and it is great!

Have em! Also bought Dairy Cookbook latest edition for DD as she needed a very comprehensive every day cook book for her Yorkshires etc. She swears by it and I still refer to them both! I also have Bero books dating back so long!

  • I've been slowly reading though mine...a couple of pages a night til I fall asleep!! What has made me chuckle the most is the veg section...aside from the salad items, every vegetable is either to be cooked or served in lashings of butter!!!! They must have had cholesterol coming out of their ears (although probably not literally!!!!)
I'm not past the storecupboard section yet so have along way to go and I'm sure I'll laugh more and more as I go through!!!

Its funny you mention yorkshires fo ryour daughter grannybroon...I had to tell my mum how to do them!! I always thought things like that would be the other way round but no matter how hard she tried they always came out like stodgy dumplings or cakes!!!! I gave her my recipe and they came out perfect first time!!!
  • I've done it again!!
My local charity bookshop is superb and I'm going to be in there every other day now.
    My latest find:
"I hate to housekeep" by Peg bracken circa 1963
It's absolutely brilliant!!! I love her to bits and have laughed so much already and I've only been home half an hour!!
The best bit....if you get a spot on your table cloth...use the sugar pot, any more and thats where the salt and pepper sellars come in to their own!!!!
She does give you great advice and tips on how to deal with problems but also gives you the lazy way out first!!!
I cant wait to get to the chapter called "how to be tight fisted without letting it show"!!! :rotfl: The next one to read is "dont just do something, sit there"!!!!

It is a DAIRY book so they are pushing dairy products ie butter. In the cookery book all the recipes use butter. Even when I first got it I used marge and still do when I get round to baking. (I eat it so don't do it often lol)
