The Dairy book of Home Management was always my favourite book - it had everything I liked in it - cooking, gardening, etc. My Mum who bought it was going to throw it away a while ago and I said NO!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Thanks for that MonstersMummy. I've just ordered it off Amazon for a total of £2.76 (including p&p). I thought I'd treat myself to yet another OS book as I won £38 in work yesterday on the bonus ball!0

Thought this site was supposed to save money.
I've just spent £2.76 on the Dairy Book of Home Management.
Mind you, I've also bought a book "A Heritage of British Cooking" by Maggie Black from my library for 50p. This includes recipes (or receipts) from Tudor to Victorian times, modernised where necessary to reflect the ingredients available today. I've only skimmed it but it looks very interesting.
I love food!If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it0 -
Wow! My Mum used to have that book. Now that brings back memories - I just remember the cover more than anything.
I take it it's a useful book to have???0 -
I remember getting into trouble as a kid over that book. Was at my nan's and the milkman left the leaflet so I filled it in in my childish scribble, she got the book and had to pay for it. OOps She wasn't happy and I do remember getting told off for it. But she's still got it and when I go to visit still have a quick look through it at things... think its a handy thing to have.
And yes its the Neil Tennant one!!..May tomorrow bring new horizon's...... ::j0 -
Reading through this thread I just looked up at the bookshelf above my head and there sitting on it was my first cook book that I bought, it was called 500 recipes for cooking for two by Katie Stewart , and was bought in 1963 for 2/6.It's a bit tatty now but it along with the other book I bought at the time called 500 Budget meals by Catherine Kirkpatrick, also at half a crown, got me through some pretty lean times over the years. I can't bring myself to chuck them out I have had them so long.0

Thanks!!! I'd almost forgotten about these! I've got the 1980 Home Management edited by Mr Tennant. Have a look at the chap on page 109 - is it Baldrick?
I'm just starting out on the OS way so these will get me off to a good start.
I've got the Dairy Book of Home Cookery from when I was a young housewife in 1978 which I used a lot in the past and 2 books I sent away for free when I was doing Domestic Science at school in 1972 : the 37th edition of the Be-Ro Home recipe book & "The Art of Home Cookery" from the Stork Cookery Service.
Lots of useful straight forward information in all these books. Probably where Delia learnt her stuff!!!
