    you were robbed
you could have done the cover yourself with a rattle can and a heat gun

    this is mse remember:)

That's a manual folding mirror you showed there , the car has power operated automatic fold which I couldn't find anyone selling apart from Peugeot. The problem was also it has the exterior temperature sensor fitted in it which makes it a more difficult fit. They needed to remove the door card and do something with the wiring, about an hours experienced labour.

I did consider buying the parts for an independant garage to fit but at the end of the day saving about £40 against professionaly guaranteed to colour match and keeping it in the manufacturers warranty?

Sometime cutting corners doesn't actually pay in the long run.
  • My 206 has temp sensor in the mirror too but its just one plug to attach it all. There is no lots of fiddly wires to connect up.

The warranty is another concern. I have a 7 year warranty - does it become invalid if the work is done by a back street garage?

This may be over simplifying things but if it's just a clip that's broken could you not just use something along the lines of tigerseal to secure your cover back on? Be aware though that if you do this you'll have an absolute mission if you ever want to get it back off - it would solve your immediate problem though.

Also, no matter how new your car somebody has always crashed one and breaking it - usually on ebay, you may well have to email and ask them for a mirror and check it's electrically folding etc but it's worth asking the question.

I've managed to fit the body of the mirror back onto the horizontal casing. It looks fine, but isn't secure - the 'catch' mechanism between the two parts has broken - so I was thinking about trying to glue it in place. Not ideal, obviously, but if I can find something strong enough to hold it, I'll do it.

Will check out Tigerseal - thanks.

The warranty will still be vaild except for the part that has been replaced / repaired may not be covered.

e.g if the repair fails and causes further damage they might not cover the work. And if you use secondhand parts they can't be expected to replace them if they fail again.

Yeah, I'm expecting similar. Not sure what planet the 5 mins and next-to-no-cost brigade are on. My car is a new model, so unlikely to find anything from a scrap yard.

A bit harsh considering you never stated what car you were talking about and your thread title asks for "general advice". We're not mind readers here and this being MSE most folk aren't driving around in brand new cars.

Even for a new car it's worth taking a look into how easy they are to swap, and checking on eBay and the likes. Certainly for a new model spares will be harder to get but new cars do still get written off from time to time.

Another option, if you can get the mirror into a state where it does it's job even if it doesn't look very nice would be to just leave it for a year or two and every now and again go looking for a cheap replacement.
