I need an alternative method of connecting my PC to the (netgear) router (having just spent a fortune on redecorating the hallway - cables are out)
Has anyone any experience of
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/netgear-wna3100-wireless-usb-adapter-802-11-b-g-n-06898047-pdt.html ?
What sort of losses am I going to get - compared to a network cable ?

You shouldn't get any losses (I assume you mean speed degradation), however you may get interference from other RF sources which could make your connection intermittent. Careful choice of the RF channel used by the router should minimise this, along with simple precautions such as keeping any cordless telephone base stations well away from the router.
Of course you could use homeplugs. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Get away with you... I have connected my laptop via an ethernet lead and then tried it wirelessly, and the speed drops by approx 30 %.
But I do agree with homeplugs though.0 -
