Also, I would say don't go overboard with the party food as almost they NEVER eat as much as you think.

A good game to round the party off and get the children to chill out, is sleeping lions.
I have often done this at my dd's parties and it helps wind them down.

One we've done before with the brownies (gives the adults a good laugh as well) - get some of the tiny bitesize doughnuts and a bit of string... thread through doughnut and get two adults to dangle - they have to try to eat it with hands behind their back... can wobble the string depending on how evil you're feeling at the time.
Musical statues - always good when your head starts to throb as they can't talk when they're frozen... I always have the very clearly stated NO SULKING IF I SAY YOU'RE OUT YOU'RE OUT rule from the start
Dancing competition - be prepared to be scared by just how much hip and rear wiggling they know at that age!
    Corners
Pass the parcel - another one to calm them down a bit when the mania gets a bit too much... interspersed with a disco they generally don't need that many games going on.
In teams - call out an object - first team to bring that object gets the point... things like a black shoe, a pebble, a bunch of keys or whatever

Thank you! I really like the idea of the doughnuts on the string! I am now planning to do this at the party from one side of the room to the other and see how it goes!

Thank you for all your wonderful ideas! It has made me think I can do this and it WILL be fun!

Now can anyone suggest anything in regards to the food. I take on board not to go OOT as small children never eat anything usually but the crisps and sweet stuff but I would like to make it a little different?
  • This thread has taken me back to my 6th birthday party!!

We had a 'Cowboys & Indians' theme party - all my friends dressed up and came along to my house (I'm sure you can pick up an outfit like that from places like poundland) and we spent hours playing in the back garden. My mum copied a Jane Asher Humpty Dumpty cake design, which was the most inspired thing I'd ever seen. She used funsize Milky Way bars to build the 'wall' (white icing as the cement) and iced a semi-circle of sponge cake which sat on the wall to look like Humpty! I'll never forget that birthday - it just shows that one of those cakes you buy from the supermarket will never replace anything your mum can make :) Homemade is always the best!

    I would have suggested hiring a face painter (well I would, wouldn't I? ):rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Could I just say, that if you decide to have the pinata, that you ensure that there is somewhere suitable to hang it from?
At one of my younger children's parties, we had one but there was nowhere to hang it up from. Cue Dad, holding it at arms length, being pursued vigouously by about 30 sugar-crazed mini party people!!:eek::eek:
He took a few whacks to the family jewels that day and says he is NEVER doing that again!!!
Try and relax and enjoy the party.

If you can round up enough ties or strips of fabric for each child Cat & Mouse is a great game for killing some energy. The mice tuck the tail (the tie) into the back of their waistband. The cats then chase the mice and once their tail is caught they are out.

Granny's Keys - One child stands facing the wall pretending to be Granny with her keys on the floor behind her. The other children start at the other end of the room and when Granny turns her back they must rush towards Granny. Granny randomly turns around and any child she catches moving must go back to the start. The first child to get all the way to Granny and grab the keys wins.

Shark Attack - Use 4 bits of newspaper as 'islands'. Have 3 or 4 children as sharks. The children all run about then when you should shark attack the children must get onto a round about before the shark tigs them. If they don't get onto an island and get tug then they become seaweed. They must stand and wave their arms. When shark attack is called they can catch them, but they must not move from the spot. This is a good one because no children end up sitting at the side.

Food wise - I always put food onto individual plates. There seems to be less waste this way. A sandwich, sausage roll, fruit kebab and savoury muffin is what I put on each plate.

For party bags I use latex helium balloons to decorate the hall and at the end of the day each child gets a balloon to take home instead of a bag. They get a wee big, but only with a piece of cake in it.

My son turns 6 soon and we are on a very tight budget! He is just having family/friends kids round plus 2-4 kids he can invite from school (haven't decided how many I can afford yet lol!) So in total 11-13 kids

I am making a pinata - second layer of paper mache drying as I type, and am planning pass the parcel, and possibly musical bumps/statues - my flat is only tiny so we can't do musical chairs! I'm also planning to initiate some sort of balloon keepy uppy before they all get popped!

I'm just going to do a little party buffet tea with jam butties, pizza, junk food etc, and try and make the cake myself (EEeeeek!)

Party bags will be a bit of cake, and a few bits from the poundshop / Mr T

I think I'm gonna give it 1.5 hrs between parent drop off and pick up - is that a bit mean? Would 2 hrs be better?

I'm just worried about entertaining them all in a small flat for 2 hrs!
