Pc World Anti-Virus Claims

Good evening!
I have been having a load of phone calls today from my Aunt who was out shopping for a laptop/netbook for her daughter - as resident geek I was getting asked question after question! I tried to get her to buy online, but alas she went looking in Currys and PC World...
I was just wondering whether anyone has had experience of PC World sales staff telling customers that using free anti-virus software will invalidate the warranty - I am 99.99% sure that no warranty could possibly stipulate that but that's what she says she was told today! Had I not been a phone call away she would have bought Norton I'm sure.
Interested to see if anyone else has heard this before!

It's a common complaint about PC World sales staff; I've heard they make similar claims that banks don't support people who use free antivirus programs. There's nothing wrong with Norton, but it's certainly cheaper to shop around for it.
If I was going to pay for an antivirus, I'd sooner buy a licence for Kaspersky as the latest version performs quite well (older versions were always relatively slow compared to Avira/Avast, but Kaspersky apparently have sorted that out).0 -
Nonsense. That alone would stop me from shopping there(if I accidentally stepped into one of their shops).
Anyway, she can tell them that she will download the ESET Smart Security 4 trial. Say thanks but no thanks.0 -
That was exactly my reaction - I told her that she was being lied to and that I would personally be looking at making a complaint - and of course not to buy any extras from them0

Aww, he must have been a bit special.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
Your totally correct, its total BS, and to answer the question about do they earn commission simple answer is YES, the more you buy the more wages they get,
scare tactics by PC world. I would phone the manager of the store or go back there and ask to speak to the manager and tell them how disgusted I was with the service and total BS spouted by that member of staff, and tell them that NONE of your family and friends will ever shop their again, and also tell him you'll be writing an email of complaint to his boss, and a nice email to Standard trading office aswell.
I did the same thing when i bought my first computer at Comets, and was told by their computer expert the computer i was thinking of buying was compatible with a tv card, so i bought the computer, after 30 days i bought the tv card and it didnt work, phoned the maker of the tv card Hauupage asking why it didnt work, reply came back, needed a new motherboard and better graphics card, not compatible, so i took the pc back to comets and told them and asked for a FULL refund.
I never set foot in their shop for 3 years.
This was before i bought the Time PC.0 -
Andy you are 100% wrong with the commision statement. This stopped a long time a go. Dixons have a bonus scheme which works on the store hitting its target and customer service scores etc.0

hehehe what scams / lies will they say next?
PC World must employ the worst sales techniques ever, when will they realise that you don't have to tell utter bullplop to make a sale?!?!?!
