So I'm in the market for my sons first mobile. He'll need only a SIM card to get give me a missed call to ring him back and perhaps the odd txt cos he'll be using an old handset of mine - nothing flashy - no web.

Any ideas ?

Sim only is a contract, you will want a PAYG for how you want to use it.

Giffgaff are currently doing 8p minute calls & 4p minute texts using the O2 network (free £5 credit if you use a link and top up by £10 see the referrers board). Prices are due to increase soon but not expected to be by much. If you were both on giffgaff calls are free (provided you top up by £10 every 3 months).

It would probably be best to see what network gives the best signal for the area your son will be calling from then look for a low cost provider.

The cheapest new PAYG phone costs £3+£10 from mobiles.co.uk/osps/e2save. £10 credit will last for a long time.

Otherwise get any PAYG sim card: icardmobile, giffgaff, tesco mobile. It doesn't make any difference for a few texts and short calls.

Giff Gaff are apparently planning to up the costs soon, http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Welcome-and-News/giffgaff-standard-rates-discussion/td-p/1477143
So you might want to avoid them and try going for Talk Mobile or Tesco's Mobile which still charge 8p/4p, although there is no guarantee that they will not follow Giff Gaff in the future.

But unlike GiffGaff, I do not believe they announced any intention too increase there prices so far.

Never heard of them, but that is very cheap, a word of caution though landlines calls are going to go up to 3p per min from Monday.
Although guess you can't really complain at those prices.

They seem to have been overlooked as everyone is in a frenzy trying to promote GiffGaff on here to get 'payback' points and money!
