Grrr. Just won a manky suit, advice needed.

Here's the situation.

Just won a suit for mr purplepatch described as 'hardly worn'.

The truth would be that the jacket is hardly worn, but the trousers have seen plenty of wear. They are shiny in places, grubby with two obvious stains and there is a 2 inch patch of pilling and bobbling on the left hip where clearly there has been friction against a bag or coat.

It just amazes me that there are such gross people out there that aren't embarrassed to send things that aren't clean for starters. There are loads of creases under the crutch which clearly shows that they haven't been near the dry cleaners. Eeeeewwwww :(

Anyway, I'm just after some advice as to how to tackle this as this is my first really duff buy off ebay. I started to compose the seller an email, but I'm just not sure how to word it. My draft sounds a bit stroppy for a first email - thought I'd ask how others here have tackled a similar situation before I do anything.

I'm in a fairly strong position as miracle of miracles, the seller left me positive feedback immediately after I paid (by paypal). The postage is pretty hefty too, so even if he offers to refund, where do I stand with regard to the postage costs?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would keep the first email very polite just pointing out the problems you feel with the suit, no need to get the sellers back up straight away, they might offer a soloution straight away

I agree. Send the seller an email and see what they suggest. They may have sent you the wrong suit. If they then refuse to sort the problem out then resort to an ebay dispute and leave negative feedback.

Even when I try and keep it polite, once you get into the realms of describing the problems, especially when saying that the item is unclean, it starts to have a "tone" to it. It's quite difficult to phrase it.

Should I mention that I want a refund or just wait and see how he responds. He's quite a newbie (100% but only 20/30 feedbacks), so I suspect he won't have much experience of this.

I would outline exactly what you want, ie, say the suit is clearly less than nearly new (or however it was described and you would therefore like a full refund.

Don't even think about negative feedback yet, give the seller a chance to rectify things first. Also if you leave neg feedback too soon you have no bargaining power over the seller.

I'd say it looks like they've sent me the wrong trousers as the jacket is lovely but the trousers are very worn.

Thanks everyone who has given advice, have sent the email. Said that the jacket is fine, but the trousers are showing signs of wear and that they are marked and need dry cleaning - I asked for a full refund inclusive of postage.

Expect I'll be back for more advice. Will certainly hold fire on leaving feedback for time being. Out of interest, say he does refund me, do I still neutral (or even neg) him as I feel quite strongly about goods that do not fit description and especially the fact that they were dirty. As I said before, he has already left feedback for me so there isn't a risk of retaliatory.

Hire a hitman for £1000 and have him/her 'extinguished'...

I would not leave a neg if the seller refunds you due to it being a mistake.

I agree with Soo, if they sort it out straight away its a positive...folk make mistakes. Any messing you around is a neutral. And a firm negative if they refuse to help.

If they have left feedback already it is possibly a mistake...if I was chancing my arm a bit I doubt I would leave feedback before buyer had had there say.

However having said all that........ I suggested once that the wooden table mats I had been sent were a failed O Level project....you can imagine the reaction. Funnily enough they have been lying around for months and I binned them last week after thinking long and hard on the EBay advert I could write to shift them.....lol

lol - bet they loved that email!

I take on board the comments made and won't neg him if he refunds me, although must say am hard pushed to accept it was a mistake as there is no way that the suit is "hardly worn" as claimed by seller. Hubby has a very nearly identical suit from the same store and has been wearing it for about 8 months now most days (it does get cleaned once in a while!). Even these trousers aren't displaying as much wear and tear as the ones we've been sold.
