Although you can also see your password in the config file using software such as http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/router_password_recovery.html which will allow you to take a copy of it.
I have reset the router and loaded in backup file. All works okay wirelessly (if thats a word....lol). I moved it back to where its been for the last 4 years and the pc can't pick up the router.
I move it back next to the pc again and bingo it works.0 -

before you do that, download and run inSSider from here on a wifi-enabled lappy:-
http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
note:- it uses the device's inbuilt wifi capability to scan, so don't put it on your desktop unless it has wifi capability
it allows you to see your wifi channel, and possibly more importantly what other
routers close to you are using - it may be as simple as changing the channel your router's wifi is operating on......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I had the exact same problem with my daughter's laptop. I eventually solved it after checking out the problem via many Google searches. I can't remember exactly how I did it as it was many months ago, but I will try and get some information when I get home. The bottom line was that I didn't change the router or settings on it.0

Are you sure you aren't being swamped by a near by BT Home Hub or similar.
I ended having to upgrade to "N" router to overcome my neighbour's set up."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I used Microsoft Fixit 50715 to solve the problem.0

Also, does the backup save ISP password as I've lost my letter.
Yes the backup file saves all the settings including, possibly, the incorrect one.0
