Multifuel stove installation

I have had some installers round and also had a quote.

I would now like to do this myself, am very aware of what needs doing and would like the council to approve it.

I have a concrete hearth already in the floor and already know that this needs to be 125mm minimum with an air gap underneath. So in terms of depth this is fine but i need to raise it from floor level.

As its bank holiday weekend, i would like to make a raised hearth from paving stones (should i be able to find any). Exactly what the hetas engineers would have done.

What i wanted to know was could i do this before contacting the council?

Ideally as the outer fireplace wall is stripped, i would like to clad this in stone also (this again won't affect anything).

But just wondered when they would need to come and check everything? Don't want to do it twice but would like to get started.

I fitted my own stove. If you already had an open fire fitted then it will be fine to do as you suggest. Just read and understand the regs and it will be ok. It has to be able to support your stove of course, which it sounds like it will. The building inspector should only need to attend when the install is complete. It will now need a CO monitor to comply with the regs too. Also if fitting a liner, a notice plate to affix to an approved place.

If in any doubt if you contact your local building control via the telephone you will find them most helpfull I think. Gather as much info on your stove regarding heat output and the temp that the hearth will reach if possible so if asked you can recite them from memory.

Thanks, i did try and ring on Friday. I was on hold for ages and know whats it like on a Friday just before a bank holiday so hung up to get on with some other chores.

The hetas engineers said they would include the co monitor on their quote but i actually already have one so no problems there.
Am currently looking for a stove but pretty much narrowed it down to a few as need double doors and theres not many options for 5kw and under but will make a note of all the relevant information.

I started something else, so won't need to start this over the bank holiday now, but nice to know i can start getting it ready when i can.
