I need a mobile for a week!

Options
I may just be the only person in the western world who doesn't have a mobile phone......
I'm living in Italy but will be going "home" to Liverpool for 10 days in September. As I'm setting up appointments to meet people for lunch and suchlike I suppose I should really be contactable. So I'm wondering what's the best thing to do.
Should I buy one of those throwaways? Should I borrow a friend's phone while I'm there?
Any suggestions for a complete dunce in this field would be greatly appreciated.

If you can find someone to loan you a handset for the time you're over here then I'd recommend checking these out http://giffgaff.com/goodybags

for £5 you can get 60 any network minutes, 300 texts. That should be enough for 10 days if its just organising social meetings, etc? or if you need more £10 will get you 250 mins/unlimited texts & unlimited internet, which might come in handy if you need to check anything online, on the move..

Just order a free sim card and have it sent to someone in liverpool prior to arrival.

To pay for the topup for the service you can pay with cash at a post office or paypoint location or a bankcard top up online. https://giffgaff.com/buy

Giffgaff is run on the o2 network so the handset will need to be either o2 or unlocked. Might even work if any of your friends in italy have a phone you can borrow which is unlocked

Hi, if you won't be using the mobile again after your trip, just buy a £10 pay as you go mobile and top up the credit as and when necessary !!

Do they not have mobiles there in Italy? Just switch the sim for 10 days to a PAYG UK one.

Or just order a spare PAYG handset with sim and credit starting from £2.90+£10 from mobiles.co.uk/e2save/osps

If your handset in Italy is unlocked, then just buy a UK PAYG sim. If not, can you get it unlocked?

Failing that, go to CARPHONEWAREHOUSE in the UK where they have cheap handsets as said above that you need to buy with a minimum £10 top up.

Yeah. I reccomend one of these http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/choose-tariff/NOKIA_1800/PPAY/NEW?network= and pay £12.95 and get it on carphone warehouse's own Talk Mobile tariff. Unless you are making a lot of calls, a single £10 top up should last you a fortnight.

Thank-you all so much for your speedy replies. I'm going to look into all your suggestions. Your help is greatly appreciated!
  • Might be worth picking up a £5 PAYG phone from Carphone Warehouse when you get here which will be unlocked and prior to getting here if you plan on calling back to Italy get one of the T-Mobile tourist SIMS - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/free-tourist-sim/
