It's 10yrs from the photo's date so if the same photo was on your provisional for 2 years that could explain the discrepancy.

i did care to read the previous posts, and i found them confusing, which is why i asked the question
im not sure there is any need for your response when all i was doing was asking for clarification as i found the previous post which i had in fact read, to be a bit unclear0 -
I think there is a bit of confusion between the "licence" expiry and the "photo" expiry. The licence is your right to drive and expires the day before you turn 70, it can be different for each class of vehicle. It can't be taken away unless you get banned for driving badly or having epilepsy or something. The dates of this are on the back of the driving licence card.
The photo lasts for 10 years, which are displayed on the front under 4a. and 4b. The problem is that if your photo has expired, you can't prove your right to drive and therefore your licence is temporarily invalid until you send a new photo and pay the fee.
I converted my licence from Australia. The date under 10. on the back is the date I got my NSW licence, when I wasn't even in the UK! I then used this to drive in the UK in my first year, didn't drive for a few years and converted it much later. My photo is valid from the date the DVLA processed the application.0 -
I had 3 points on my old battered one that had expired so i sent off the paper licence and photocard and they sent me a new one with the old points removed.I was expecting them to charge me extra for removing the old points. The post office will take your new photos and fill in the form for you for about £5.0

If you change name or address the new photocard will probably start from the date of the change but expire after 10 years after the original licence was issued, which might explain the 3 / 5 year issue? We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
We belong to the Earth0
