I've bought a mobility car in the past and I couldn't drive it off the forecourt until the tax was in place... the dealer dealt with it all

Part of the procedure is to return the old tax disc when changing categories on the car. The DVLA insist that this is surrendered at the time. If it is not available and still in force, a form has to be completed to explain why (or at least that used to be the case).

Mine was returned to the seller when i got all my own tax sorted, he said he needed it back so he could change it to his new car, when i went to the dvla office i filled in a form to change back to normal tax and they gave me it no problems without asking for the old one, is the disabled tax disc not the responsibility of the tax owner to deal with as its for their benefit.

A road fund licence is specific to one car. It can not be changed to be put on another car.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

You know exactly what i mean but your just nit picking. he needs to return it so he can change his disabled tax and put on his new car, why are you making such a big deal out of my posts?

having come across a similar situation

my mother recently passed away and had a car with was exempt from road tax liability.
    I phoned DVLA
to get new tax disc just requires a V10 form plus a V62 form to be completed and taken along with MOT and insurance certificate to the local post office to purchase the new tax disc.

as this would be difficult for the new buyer, it is simpler for the seller to deal with, hence why some posters have mentioned the dealer sorting it out for them.

the new rules have come in meaning that an existing insurance must be in place to enable the tax disc to be purcashed before you drive of the the forecourt
when we purchased out latest car in May, we had to arrange a temp insurance and pass this info to the dealer so they could sort out the tax disc before we collected the car
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

We're buying the car from The Carshop and they have told us we'll have to do the car tax thing, not them. Is that not the way it usually works? If we have to do the tax thing when we collect the car, it sounds as though there is no way that it can be driven legally as we won't have the log book until we get the car so we can't even get it home, let alone 25 miles to the DVLA without it being untaxed.

    I'm a bit stumped.

well we bought an ex mobility car and we had the same problem, the dealer (nissan) told us they couldnt do it, we had to rush down to the post office, it was about 4.30 and we were panicking trying to park etc etc, nightmare
  • I bought a Motability car and the dealer took my £240 or whatever and taxed it for me. I would not have accepted a deal where I was running around with unfamiliar paperwork. That is their job if they want the sale.
