Buying an ex-motability car.
We're in the process of buying an ex-motability car, and have been told that we need to travel to the nearest DVLA office (aprox 25 miles) to change the tax disk category. I have no problem doing it BUT If we collect the car on Saturday, is it legal to drive it until the DVLA is open on Tuesday?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I can't imagine that it is legal - the fact that you are choosing to do this on a non office day isn't really an excuse. We bought one a couple of years back - the garage did all the paperwork once we'd paid the deposit and we picked it up a week later taxed etc.Adventure before Dementia!0

If you are buying from a dealer then get them to do it for you, I bought an ex mobility car a few years back and the dealer sorted everything out for me and taxed the car, only problem i had was that the DVLA cocked up and sent me the new V5 still showing the car as a mobility vehicle, but that was their fault and they sent me out a new document.I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world0

Although not the correct way but i asked the seller to leave the tax with me for a couple of days till i got it all changed, he was happy to do this for me and when i got my own tax i returned the tax disc to him. I wasnt trying to avoid paying tax in anyway as i had to pay for the full month, it was just because it was easier and simpler all round and saved me getting flagged up by the anpr cameras, saved police time if i got stopped, saved me a fine and car clamped and in the end the tax man still got payed
Iam sure someone will be along soon with the rule book and quotes to shoot me down though.0 -
We're buying the car from The Carshop and they have told us we'll have to do the car tax thing, not them. Is that not the way it usually works? If we have to do the tax thing when we collect the car, it sounds as though there is no way that it can be driven legally as we won't have the log book until we get the car so we can't even get it home, let alone 25 miles to the DVLA without it being untaxed.
I'm a bit stumped.0 -

No not really, it's probably what I'd have done, but I think we both realise that we would be wide open to prosecution if pulled up for fraudulent use of "free" taxI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
I can't see how it is still has a tax disc on. The previous owner has to retain the tax disc to be able to get another Disabled Class one for their new vehicle.0

you are correct but maybe the previous owner is dead, either way the disc belongs to the user not the car.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -

Its not the tax disc the OP is looking to swap, what they are looking to do is change the taxation class as the V5 will have DISABLED on it, to change this the need to get to the dvla and do some form filling if i remember correctly and then they will be given a new tax disc, but the problem for them is the drive to the dvla with no road tax.
To the OP - I would say to the dealer that you will just leave it as its too much hassle and the hopefully they will get there !!!! in gear and get it sorted for you, i think they are just being lazy and hope you will do it.0 -

But the DVLA would have retained the old tax disc. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
