Slide your new drive into the bay and hook up your cables as shown in the diagram above. As a slave drive you'll want to use the middle connector on the data cable, leaving the end connector in the master drive. Also, if you already have an audio cable running to your existing CD drive, you can leave it there or move it to the new drive. Also, go into Control Panel and pick the icon "Sounds and Audio Devices" (or Multimedia depending on your Windows version) and click on the hardware tab. Next, double-click on the name of your CD/DVD drive and pick the properties tab. Make sure that "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" is checked.

yes kevin & 30111987 I'm playing a cd now and i've disconnected the 4 pin lead from the mobo, you're right.

So why is it fitted in the first place?

Its optional as some PCs dont have onboard sound but a PCI souncard :)

Its a legacy device, a hang over from a few years back, that no bright spark at the manufacturers has thought of getting rid of to save a few pennies.

Oh yeah and if you dont get the promp of what you would like to do when you insert a CD I found changing the drive value in the registry solves that problem, Beware changing the registry may have an adverse affect to your PC

I just change the value from 1 to 2.

right browntoa, I've ticked the 'enable digital ...' box.

I may as well leave the original audio lead in place for now, and not fit one to the new drive. Or do away with it altogether later.
The DVD player isn't here yet, I'm trying to think in advance.

I think I understand now why the leads are not needed now.

Thanks for your help all of you.
