The number of prizes of each size varies from month to month. There's a rather complicated (but perfectly well-defined) formula for it. You can see next month's distribution at http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/rates.jsp.

You are 185 times more likely to win £50 or £100 than you are to win anything higher. And you are 6,360 times more likely to win £1,000 or less than you are to win more than £1,000.

This explains why I always get £50 - although I must be due a £100 by now ...

i hold power of attourney over my brothers finances and invested £6000 2 years ago - he is very fortunate and has averaged a win of £50 every other month so far
i have also invested £450 for my 3yr old son and he too has won £50 so far (which i have re-invested)
my mother in law however has £11500 in premium bonds, and has won only £150 in the past 2 years,
its the luck of the draw

i wish now i had invested my 30k 5 yrs ago in premium bonds rather than lose 18k on the stock market, at least i would have known it was safe

My husband had approx 10K in PB and then topped it up to full amount of 30K while we where waiting to buy a house.

Over the 6 months he held the 30K he won about £300 in £50 chunks.

I held 1K then added another 9K. So a total of 10K and I won more with the 1K in then when I had 10K.

I won in total about £300.

Won another £50 in Julys draw.

Nothing for me in Augusts draw and I thought it was a bit late for anything for this month as they usually turn up by th 11th,but four envelopes dropped through the door and another 200 quid.

So thats 300 since may on 11,000 holding.

These have all been won on 2x 5000 holding not the odds and sods I have reinvested.

I have just checked the amount won on my £30K holding during the last 12 months. It was £1,150 - which equals 3.8%.

Given that I am a higher rate taxpayer, and premium bond winnings are exempt from Income Tax, I would have needed to find an alternative investment that generated a gross return of 6.4% in order to gain the same net cash.

I'm happy to keep this spare cash in premium bonds; it generates a little bit of excitement at the beginning of each month, and [usually] pays for a couple of meals out for my better-looking half & me.
