Windscreen Chip

Please excuse my ignorance on this but where's the best place to get this done? Having spoken to Autogl*ss, it doesn't seem to be as simple as their adverts make out.

The chip is about 1.2cm across (spikey kind of snowflake shape), is about 4 inches left of centre as you look out of the car and about 6 inches up from the bottom of the windscreen. When the windscreen wipers are on the driver's side wiper crosses the chip and it's this that seems to be the problem. The woman I spoke to at Autogl*ss said it would probably be a replacement windscreen rather than a chip repair.

Does this sound right? That would mean that the majority of chips would mean a replacement windscreen.

Thanks

The person you were speaking to at Autoglass is incorrect - they can fix chips up to 1.5cm across within the driver's wiper area, but outside direct driver line of sight (which is roughly in line with the steering wheel edges) - try calling back and you should hopefully have more luck! :)

it might not be repairable its not until you start cleaning it up you know for certain whether a satisfactory repair can be carried out

Check out the smaller local companies, theyneed the work and offer a more personalise service if you are near Glasgow - Kilmarnock I can point you to a couple of companies.

Some inurers class ths as a claim now.
Not one that affects your ncd (apart from Swiftcover), but it does mean you can't cancel your insurance later in the year.
I leave them now until they fail the mot, or until the dots eventually join up.
Although 1 I repaired last summer with Araldite is lasting ok.
  • Check the if it's within the area that would fail an MOT, I've had a 30mm crack in my windscreen go through 3 MOTs and it ain't got any worse dispite 2 periods of artic conditions in my case it's not repairable and outside the area set down in the MOT test, eventually it'll be a new screen but don't believe the advertising, Autoglass would rather fit a new screen than do an FOC repair.

After arranging a repair similar to yours tomorrow I can advise...

If its closer than 15cm to the edge, they recommend a replacement. (not thats it necessarily needed)
If the chip is bigger than a 10p piece its usually unrepairable. And if its cracked its a no go.
I'm on my 2nd screen this year, so lets hope they glue it up this time :)

Still contact a local company and see if it can be repaired.

If you use autoglass, and get it "foc" via your insurer then (although your NCB usually not affected) it is registered as a claim with all the downsides of this (premium loading and you have to disclose it to future insurers).

So much cheaper just to pay for the repair yourself and keep your insurer out of the picture.
