internet connectivity problem

I have a desktop which has always been online using an ethernet cable.

In our new home it is not possible to run a cable to the machine so I bought an Edimax USB WiFi adapter from Amazon.

WE are now with Sky and have the Sagemcom n standard router. We were previously with o2.

While I am getting connectivity, it keeps slowing right up and then the network symbol switches to a red X.

I have tried our laptop and my phone on our WiFi and they are both working perfectly.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to solve this?

One other thing, my signal is good, 4 out of 5 bars.

First thoughts, possibly USB prone to interference or sensitive to another wireless from neighbour on the same frequency. Download inssider ( http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ )and look to see what other access points are around and if any are on the same channel as yours. If any others are strong on the same channel as you, change your channel, best channels to use are 1,6 and 11.

    Others : -

Move any DECT phones well away from router and USB.

Where is the USB connected, front or back of machine ?

Try putting USB on short extension USB cable and see if you can find a place better for reception.

How far away is the modem from the computer ?

Not a fan of wireless unless there is no alternative.
I use a pair of homeplugs to connect my desktop from one end of the house to the other.

    I bought these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Max-Value-Mbps-Home-Double/dp/B000TV7FJ4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314364407&sr=8-1

They come with a couple of network cables.

    Loads on the market.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I agree, first try a channel change, then stick the adapter on a USB extender cable. Get it up higher and away from the big tin box.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I have worked out that the real problems occur when I have my Windows Phone is plugged in to the machine and Zune running. This would be plugged in to the USB port beside the wifi adaptor on the front of the machine, suggesting some form of interference from that.

When I unplug the phone I get connectivity but it is slow. I did a test on www.speedtest.net and got 1.14mps download.

The router is one room away and beneath a wooden floor in the basement. I am constantly getting between 4 and 5 bars in terms of router connectivity.

The DECT base is right beside the router but I am not having the same issues with the laptop as I am with the desktop.

As with homeplugs, they look great but I'd rather do the job with my £10 wifi adapter instead of shelling out £41 on the homeplugs.

The Inssider utility is very interesting. It seems to show me on a different channel to everyone else. 6 last night and 1 this morning. Everyone else is on 7 or 11.

The RSSI is showing a constant 65 - 70 and the Last Seen is updating fine.

In spite of this, I cannot connect to the router.

Should I send the WiFi adapter back? It is a very small one, Edimax EW-7811un.
