Email opt-out/unsubscribe

When doing online shopping we often have the option to opt out of any emails for advertising and marketing. I've noticed that I often get emails from companies even though I opted out of emails from them.

First I thought that maybe I had made a mistake when filling the form but now I'm very careful and I still get emails. I then have to unsubscribe using the email link.

I'm I overly cynical or do companies just ignore the part of the form where you can opt out?

I do not believe you are overly cynical you have a point. I have found the same although once I have un-subscribed through the email link I never hear from them again.

It's not necessarily a case of deliberately ignoring these things - it could just be rubbish programming. Either way it's a pain.

This is exactly my experience. When I first buy something from a company I've not used before, I always get marketing mails in the next day or so despite ticking (or unticking) the right boxes.

However, once I've clicked the unsubscribe option, I don't get any more. It might be accidental or deliberate, who knows? But they certainly don't take any notice when you first sign up.

When I send newsletters out I always include a link on the email to ubsubscribe. You click that and you won't receive them anymore.

But I find alot of people don't both doing this and reply with the word 'unsubscribe' in the subject or body -- these go straight in the recycling bin. Many companies also use email address' like donotreply@.

So firstly make sure you follow the procedure.

Secondly.. next trick is to have multiple mailing/marketing lists (different types/categories for example)... you're automatically subscribed to them all so when you unsubscribe you may well get the promotions from other lists. Usually there is an 'unsubscribe from all lists' options, others not.

Thirdly.. if they buy in lists that you are on it will all start again!

Finally.. probably more so the case for many... they just don't care. Afterall how do you plan an stopping them or punishing them?

If you have a SPAM button on your email account you could try marking the unwanted mail as SPAM.
