line sync speed, attenuation (dB) and SNRM, upstream and downstream for both. Can be found by logging into the router and it'll be on something like a Status page :)

As you should be on full LLU, one thing you can do is get them to turn off the Dynamic Line Management on your connection (yes, LLU providers use thier own versions of this horrible system also :( ) The forum teams can help with this and general speed/service issues. Isn't instant as it's via a forum but they generally get there :) In order to help, work through the Reporting Slow Speeds sticky before you post, so you've got all the info together. Probably most important bit will be running the router from the test socket to eliminate internal wiring issues (and check all microfilters, a duff one will stuff your connection). They usually get it sorted in the end.

One other thing to bear in mind if you want to switch, then your line will have to revert to BT (in almost all cases) for a minimum contract period (was 12 months), so be sure to investigate fully :)

I've decided to go with Plusnet and that should be live in 2-3 weeks.
In the meantime, here's the stats according to TalkTalk:-
    Downstream:-
    Rate - 1838
    SNR (dB) - 24.0
    Attenuation (dB) - 76.8

    Upstream:-
    Rate - 639
    SNR (dB) - 14.6
    Attenuation(dB) - 51.0

    I don't have a master socket, there's only one socket in here and that's basically a face-plate.

The Plusnet guy said it may not need changing, but if it did it was £50 to get it replaced.

  • I'm pretty certain you won't regret your decision to go with Plusnet. Please let us know how you geton.

at 76dB I'm slightly surprised you're getting a sync of anything, let alone 1.8meg !!! I suspect a router reporting problem there. What are the stats using your belkin ???

The other obvious thing there is the 24dB snrm on your downstream - indicates you've had an unstable connection and the DLM has upped your snrm to stabilise things - this in itself will lower your speed.

Also, upstream attenuation is normally around half +/- a few dB, so your ratio of up to down is out, more possible evidence of a line issue....

All in all those numbers just don't add up. As I said, plug your belkin back in and get the stats off that as a comparison. When you say your connection has gone slow, what were typical speeds before it went downhill, and what are you currently getting ??

I'm beginning to think there's more than one issue going on on that line :( ........ have you tried working through this guide to eliminate internal (to your property) issues ???

I was getting around 2.5Mb before it all went downhill.
TalkTalk did say there was some noise on the line, but that's nw been sorted.

I don't have a master socket to plug into, it's basically a faceplate and the wires disappear straight into the wall. I can't find another socket in the house and I've lived there 10 years.

After taking the plate off the wall, I can only see 3 wires (which seems odd as I thought they'd be in pairs).

I'll have to check the stats on the Belkin when I get in (I'm at work now).

Don't know if it makes any difference but I'm currently on an ADSL line (not ADSL Max or ADSL2+).

fixed rate ADSL ?? errmmm...a 2 meg fixed package by any chance ?? That might explain the high downstream snrm.

But if you'd been migrated to the TT DSLAM off the old tiscali one, you should be on ADSL2+ now ?!?!?!?

Would stil like to see the stats taken from the belkin, 'coz at 76dB downstream getting even 2meg would be pretty amazing.....

I'm actually paying for "up to" 8meg but they won't upgrade me to an ADSL2+ line without a brand new contract which is what prompted my original question.

Aparently, I'm still on the Tiscali wiring which is why TT can't just sort it out (I've been talking to various muppets from TT technical services, one of whom wouldn't take my word for it that I didn't have a master socket and said I must be looking in the wrong place).

I forgot to test the Belkin last night, I'll do it tonight and let you know what's what.

Quick update, still got the DLink router installed (keep forgetting to re-test the Belkin), but the line either keeps dropping (the up time on the router stats page keeps resetting even though the router is never switched off). The stats are all over the place and don't seem to make any more sense than the lot I posted further up this thread.

Had a text from Plusnet to say I should be moved over on the 13th.

Plusnet did offer me fibre-optic as well, which apparently Virgin couldn't, but decided to stay normal for the time being as I don't think I need high a download speed. Might be one to consider in the future though.

BT don't offer an unlimited broadband package. All of there services are capped.

Sky are the only company that offer truely unlimited.
