When is the best time to get a phone contract?

My iPhone 3 is dying and I need to invest in a new one. It was PAYG which we spent £350 on Christmas 2009 and I've probably got a rotten deal out of it, due to the fact I probably have spent double that in credit in two years.

Soooo I am changing to a contract phone, but I've never had one before! Do they change the pricing throughout the years? i.e. if you invest at Christmas are the deals better, or worse? Or are they the same?

I'm on Orange at the moment and have £90 in my phone fund (probably will reach £100 by christmas) so what should I do with that? I'm not impressed with Orange's iPhone contract deals, they seem far too expensive for far too little minutes/texts... but I'll just have £90 sitting there, so should I invest in a new phone and sell it on eBay or Mazuma, or whichever gives me the best deal... or does anyone else have an ingenious idea?! :)

Well I bought it when it was 2 years old obviously and I've had it for two years almost now, so it's basically an OAP in phone terms, and it's just really slow and old. Apple doesn't even sell it anymore! And when I was on holiday a few months ago it completley died, and wouldn't turn on or anything and I had to reset it, and it did the same again for a few hours yesterday.

Do a full factory reset, memory possibly full, possibly the battery is on it's way out.

    Nooooo!

The fact that you are on PAYG is not in itself a reason for spending so much. Check out giffgaff. It is PAYG but you get contract style deals; their £10 goodybag will get you 250 minutes, unlimited texts and truly unlimited data.

Plus if you order a SIM through one of their members, then you get an extra £5 with your first £10 top up. PM me if you want one off of me.
