Even if the car still has a valid MOT it's still technically illegal as it's deemed as un-roadworthy.
  • Unfortunately it's a very common problem with modern coil springs (seemingly made to a price). I've lost count of the number of snapped ends sitting in the road, especially near the local council's brainless traffic calming measures. Saw a rear one fail and drop off a mk2 Clio once when it accelerated out of a business with a steep drop-kerb outside.
Springs themselves aren't expensive - e.g. eurocarparts and any mechanic can fit them with the right tools. I'd give the garage a miss if they are overcharging and get it done elsewhere, even for the sake of a new test fee.
A few days before next MOT time, inspect with a good torch to see if the ends of the springs are complete with their final loop.

  • If you take your car away they will charge £28.00 retest because it happened to my daughter yesterday. She was told the work would cost £100 for new wiper blade and suspension ball joint. She has since sourced the parts £10.00 blade, £9.99+ VAT for ball joint and mechanic taking £40.00 to fit so still cheaper
