New Contract vs. Upgrade

My contract with Orange ends in 1 month, and I've given my 30 day notice. This current contract was an 18 month deal at £25/month with 15 months of redemption cashback (that I've redeemed!). I also got £50 cashback at the time by putting the purchase through TopCashBack, meaning that my 18 month contract cost me a net price of £25 (or £1.38 a month :j).

The real question now is - should I upgrade my phone for free and start paying £25 a month for it flat, or shoudl I just take out a brand new contract under a similar redemption deal as before?

I can't see any advantage to renewing my existing vs. scrapping it and getting a new contract with incentives and bonuses.... just wanted to check in case anyone knows something I don't and can advise - thanks! :)

If you don't care about losing your current mobile number then go for the new contract with the bonuses and the bling and stuffs :)

There is no such thing as a free phone. Never has been, never will be. The cost of the phone is recouperated through increased monthly payments. If you want to know how much that free phone is costing you, check out the equivalent SIM only tarrif for the same period of contract. We showed in another thread that not only was a guy paying for a HTC Desire Z but was actually paying over twice as much as CPW sold them standalone SIM free.

The worst and most expensive way of getting a mobile phone contract....

The cheapest way is to get your phone unlocked and get a SIM only contract.
  • I see that - I think Orange would give me the Galaxy SII for free on a 24 month renewal, but stumping up the £25/month more than pays for that phone. Net cost: £600.

I could get an HTC Desire HD for free on a new contract, at £25/month, and get 11 months of a 24 month contract half price. Gross cost £600. Saving: £137.50. Net: £462.50 :(

Coming at it from the other angle I could get a Nokia 1800 for free, but with 21 months of the contract for free. Gross cost: £75. Chuck that phone away and buy an SII straight up - Amazon sell an SII for £450. Net: £525

Hmmm. No closer to deciding =)

If you would be okay with keeping your current handset, take a look at giffgaff. Their £10 goodybag would get you 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data. Make sure you order your sim through an existing member to get an extra £5 too.

300m+500Mb on Orange are available for 24x£0.99 by redemption (e2save). Minus quidco/tcb.
