Our cat was hit by a car outside the house. Sadly, the outcome was not good and although she made it home, she crawled behind the washing machine and died.

However, the car who hit her stopped and knocked on our door and told us. Although I was in shock at the time, I will always be grateful to them for stopping to tell us and helping us look for her. I do not blame them as it is a quiet residential area and could not have been speeding as she was hit at the end of a road. I know they were very shocked and both in tears, at one point I remember trying to comfort them too.

*doodle* - I hope your cat makes a full recovery.

I apologise for my lack of thanks, my button is not working. :o
  • I ran over a cat about a few years ago. It was awful.

I was on a dark country lane, going about 40mph (speed limit was 70!!!) and kitty ran straight out, almost between my front and back wheel. There was nothing I could do. I braked, and screamed and was just hysterical. Fortunately my husband was with me. He got out with a torch to check on kitty. I didn't look but apparently her eyes were open and she was in a pool of blood. Hopefully it was a quick death :(

There were only about 3 houses on the road so we thought we would look for the owner. First house we knocked at said it belonged to next door, so we knocked next door and the owner was quite upset. He didn't cry or anything but you could tell. I couldn't stop crying, it still haunts me now.

I have 3 cats myself so I guess I'm biased, but I don't understand the heartless people who just drive off. Hope your kitty gets better soon :)
  • Thanks for your responses :)
We were able to bring him home and he is now on cage rest for a new months. He was really lucky and we are so happy that he is home.
It's a shame that drivers don't have to report accidents like this. He is a much loved animal and I just wish that the driver had an ounce of common decency.

  • My boy got run over on his first unsupervised trip out. He went missing after leaving the garden and the next day, the vet phoned me to say he had been handed in after a RTA (thank goodness for microchips). The vet said that a woman brought him in after finding him in her street and her neighbour said he'd been there hours... So the car driver didn't stop and a woman in her house noticed him and left him there for hours in pain.... Was very angry about that at the time. He had a diaphramatic hernia (or ruptured diaphram) and lots of broken ribs. His internal organs had gone through the busted diaphram and were up beside his lungs. I'll never forget going to see him at the vet and him making a crinklely noise - he was trying to purr, but cats purr from their diaphram so he couldn't. He had to have a serious operation and was meant to stay in his cage for 6 weeks after. After about a week, he was hanging upside down from the top of it, throwing litter out of his tray into his bed and generally being a terror. I gave up and let him have the freedom of the lounge. He was fine and recovered well. That was three years ago now and you wouldn't know anything had happened to him.
  • Best of luck with the recovery - hope all goes well.

I don't understand people that can kill an an animal and just go on their merry way.

Our first to get hit on the roads died in the crash - it was at night (hence we no longer leave them out at night) althugh it seems that driver did stop and move her body to the side of the road - the next morning, the entire family (six at the time) happened to be going to 7.30am mass - and passed her body. Mass was swiftly forgotten, and I met with death for the first time.

The second cat was left bleeding and screaming agony on the road, and a neighbour called to the house by chance, knowing we were animal people - not realising it was ours. She had a broken jaw, was paralysed, and I still get tears thinking of her lying there, afraid, in pain - because of some awful person who didn't even try to do anything. I understand it's upsetting to hit an animal but that doesn't mean you just "move on and forget it" without trying to do anything for it :/

The car in front of me hit a cat a couple of weeks ago, and didn't stop. I stopped, and the poor thing passed away in my arms, still purring. There was only one house (it was on a quiet country road), so I knocked and told the owner.
I drove round the corner, parked up and sobbed, I felt so bad, he was only a young cat, and the house and garden were full of kids toys.
