and the thoughtless sw1ne left him to crawl home by himself! And, his collar says that he has been chipped and my phone number is on his disc. Urgh! My boy is ok and was at the vets within thirty minutes of us finding him. Anyway, he has broken his pelvis but everything else seems to be ok.

Oh he must have been in agony! Our poor furbaby!

Anyway, I'm waffling - apologies.

When he comes home he will need to stay in a cage. A friend is lending me her cage (it's huge) and I can pick this up this afternoon. My vet said that because he is a young cat he *should* recover quite quickly (in 6 weeks).

Please can you share your recovery stories if you have had to go through this terrible ordeal with your furbaby.

Hiya, our cat got run over and fractured his pelvis at about the same age. The worst part was keeping him in for a few weeks afterwards :( . He made a full recovery but never liked to be stroked near his back end. He went on to be run over another 3 times!! Each time he managed to get himself home. He lived till he was 14 :) .

He is insured but, tbh, I don't care about that. I'd eat beans on toast for a year if need be.

My lovely vet says that he has a fractured pelvis but he won't know how badly until this afternoon. He said that his internal organs (esp his bladder) were more important than a broken bone as a ruptured bladder can cause more problems.

The vet rang this morning and told me that - so far - his organs seem ok. He has had a wee, eaten and seems much brighter.

When he comes home he will need to stay in a cage. A friend is lending me her cage (it's huge) and I can pick this up this afternoon. My vet said that because he is a young cat (he turned one in June) he *should* recover quite quickly (in 6 weeks).

We have been looking an those invisible fences for the back garden because we don't want this happening again. Has anyone got one of these?

    Hi Doodle,
I adopted my cat a couple of years ago from the RSPCA, he had been in a car accident and his pelvis had been smashed, they plated it and had him on cage rest for 6 months, the nerves in his back leg had also been damaged and so he had like a dropped foot, & they said it might have to be amputated if it didnt improve. I saw him on the website with a cone round his neck and fell in love.

Anyway to cut a long story short, we adopted him took him for a few check ups to the vet to make sure his pelvis was healing properly, and his back leg went right within weeks of being with us. He is now a housecat and we have trained him to use a harness so that he can go in the garden, but no further. He's very well and healthy so please dont worry about your poor baby he will heal fine:)

As for the heartless creep that ran him over and left him there, words fail me.:(

awww hope your cat recovers soon.

Sorry to say the driver doesn't need to stop.

I know plenty would, I certainly would, but they don't have to, seems heartless i know sorry :(

Years ago we were on our way home when the car in front of us hit a cat and didn't stop (he knew he'd done it!). We stopped and while I was stroking the cat it died :( . It was horrible, I was crying but knew we couldn't just leave it there. I knocked on about 7 doors before I found the right house and told them what had happened :( . To this day my husband still says "you do realise they probably think it was us that ran it over!" I say I'd rather they thought that than leaving it there.

my little girl was adopted from the shelter after she had an argument with a car which caused her pelvis to be fractured.

we adopted her a few months after the accident and at first she walked a bit funny and couldnt really jump. she also didnt like you petting her back or touching her back paws.

a year on she is incredibly fiesty, has a tiny limp while walking and where she can't jump something, pulls herself up by the front legs! she has also learned to run really fast throughout the house. we can also stroke her and play with her feet, and now only protests when I get a bit too enthusiastic clipping her nails.

For a cat with a gammy leg, I couldnt believe it when she escaped and i found her on a 6 foot tall fence walking along like nothing had happened!

From what my vet said, pelvises seem to heal really quickly and rather well. your kitty may limp, but he should be able to compensate for it in the end.

also, at our first visit to the vets after we adopted her (so they could get an idea of her baseline incase she got injured later on), so about 4 months after the accident, she pulled herself up onto the counter THREE times during the inital visit by her front claws and paws and crawled and opened all the drawers. they didnt believe me when I said she had been run over and had a fractured pelvis!

oh, and we attempt to keep her inside now, and she goes out on a harness in the garden.
  • my cat was shot by an air rifle 13 weeks ago and after countless operations....
he is still recovering.... its a slow process.... AND he still has to wear a collar( apart from meal times when we take it off but have to watch him like a hawk) as we are waiting for one of the operations areas to 'granulate'....

he is desperate to go outside but is not allowed...... he was a proper outside cat but we have decided to keep him in once he has made a full recovery as he cant be trusted not to wander ( he just doesnt know it yet ;))

good luck for your baby xx
  • Awwww poor baby, they go to such efforts to come home ..... swine.

Anyway, my wee girl cat had to be "crated" for 6 weeks when she was 4 months old after she misjudged jumping on something and knackered her knee - and again around 6 months later when it went again:(

She was totally fed up but stick to your guns and no matter how hard it is, stick to it, it will pay off in the end.

Try to have him in rooms where you are so he gets a bit of company.

OP - I'm glad to hear your cat is on the mend. I hope you don't mind me sharing 3 of my non work experiences...

One of my cats got run over when I happened to by just up the road - I didn't realise it was my cat at first, but put my VN hat on and went running over...... The guy who had hit her had stopped, and was cradling her in tears - he was so apologetic :( She was unconcious but alive, and by the time we got her to the vets she was gone.

The poor guy who hit her was soooo upset ....

He put some money through my door a few days later to help pay for her cremation....

On the flip side I remember as a kid - perhaps 5 or 6 being in a car - can't remember who was driving, and hitting a cat. I distinctly remember the bump and yowl, and watching a ginger thing run away. Whoever the driver was didn't stop because, as the cat had run off it must have been ok :( I wish I could remember who the driver was..

Another story - my Pa is disabled, and he hit a dog once, just after dropping me off for school, aged about 9 or 10- now my Pa is no dog lover, but he knows the law - ie an RTA involving a dog must be reported. However, because of his disability, he couldn't get out, so he drove home & phoned the police. I was across the road, and I remember getting upset because bystanders were bad mouthing my Pa for driving on...
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
