Mobile Phone Technology - What's the Next Big Leap?

My mobile phone contract has expired and at the moment I'm unsure whether to go into a new two year contract just to get a shiny new phone.
I've got a basic Android device. I know an HTC Sensation or Samsung Galaxy 2 will be faster and will run more apps and take better pics, but I'm not sure whether the technology is such a great leap from what I've already got.
I appreciate that if I constantly wait for 'the Next Big Thing' I'd never buy anything, but what are your thoughts on mobile technology advances over the next six months? Are we likely to see any major advances that would make it worth the wait?
What do you all think?

Well ask yourself what new app or function you need from a new phone.
If your that bothered just convert to a sim only plan with a rolling contract your not tied to and then you can wait till you find something you like and want.0 -

IPhone 5. Big advances, no not really. Do everythign you want, probably not.
But it doesn't matter if it does or does not live up the the hype it will be the thing people try to emulate or beat and all phones will be compared to for the next 12 months.0 -
3D handsets for those who like gaming.
Samsung or LG has one out and where one goes, if it is successful, others will follow. Not a gamer myself, so no real interest.0 -

LG and HTC actually. My boyfriend got sick when the LG rep demoed it to him apparently.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0 -
Phones will shortly have NFC chips in them (or possibly might not need them if they put NFC into simcards).
That's the touchless payment thing that's happening with credit/debit cards just now. Will likely be a year or 2 before it gains much speed though.0 -
Perhaps someone could advance battery technology to last past teatime....

I'd be suprized if they actually do change anything to do with the battery power: its not been used as an advertising point for any handsets I can bring to mind in the past decade, guess its just not as easy to sex-up as "3D display" and other handset gimmiks yet its the one thing everyone seems to hate! It was one of my reasons for not bothering to renew my contract, having already tried and tested carrying round my handset with me for months on end: just to use it! I gave up. Take my hat off to those who continue to do so, that shows determination! I just have a thing about wires and excess weight to carry around.0

Well some phones are coming integrated now with the wireless charging surface.
You just put your phone done on some pad and it charges your phone without having to plug in a charger, i one or two phones already have it and you can get converter cases to add the functionality to some phones but thats no where near as cool as having it built it.
Another thing that was mentioned was NFC, that will be a nice jump when its more mainstream.0
