Any recommendations for baby bottles ?

Hey everyone,

We are bottlefeeding our baby due Jan nxt yr and am looking to buy bottles for the purpose of this.

I don't really want to get into the whole breast bottle debate I know its widely acknowledged that breast is best but for us it isn't going to be an option I wont go into why but it isn't.

With that in mind does anyone have any recommendations as to which bottles are best to use ? I have 2 DS already aged 8 and 4 and the eldest suffered terrible colic which was eased a bit at the time by using NUK anti colic bottles which no longer seem to be around.

DS2 did not suffer with it but still had some NUK bottles and also just some of the tomee tipee ones.

Have been looking at Dr Browns bottles and also Mam anti colic ones just wondered if anyone had opinions on either or indeed any other brand ? Had tried Avent with DS1 and they were terrible for leaking all over the place I hated them, but they may have changed by now.

Also any advice on which steriliser to buy there seems to be so much choice now and we are starting from scratch.

Any advice appreciated

xx

Someone on another thread advised not to get the tommee tippee ones.. she said her little one got terrible colic and when at the hospital they staff there said many of the babies brought in with severe gastric disturbances were using these bottles and they were much improved once they had different ones.

My sister used the Dr Brown ones for her daughter as they were the only ones she could use as she had a total tongue tie and simply couldnt breastfeed at all.

I used the mothercare steriliser bottles with 2 of mine.. though with the NUK orthodontic teats.

I kinda guessed you'd have some experience in the matter ;) would your sister recommend the Dr Browns ones ?

How come your up so late ......... wait don't tell me its down to pain ........ ditto I'd kill for a good nights sleep too I'm so jealous of those who can go to bed at 9 and sleep through :(

    Thanks again :) xx

I am always up late! I function on about 6 hours usually.. which has its plus points! If I went to bed at 9 I would be up at 3... as for a good nihts sleep I think I have forgotten what that is!

My sister said the Dr Browns ones were worth every extortionate penny in her opinion.. if faffy to clean and put together.

We both tried the Avent ones with little success..

Im sure you can still get the NUK ones my uncle had them for my cousin a couple of years ago.. but they live in Germany so maybe they are limited here..

My cousin couldn't B/F and she has recommended the MAM ones. I ordered a set in the Mothercare glitch and I really like them because they are self sterilising. You set them up in a specific way, add some water and pop them in the microwave. She also said she tried lots of differnt ones and these were the best for helping with collic.

    Good luck.

I too would highly recommend the MAM ones. The self sterilizing feature is brilliant especially in the early days of very frequent feeding and the need to take your baby to visit elderly or infirm family members. I prefer them to Dr Browns bottles as they are far less fiddley but achieved exactly the same outcome which seemed strange to me as the MAM ones were so much cheaper. I bought the microwave sterilizer and 6 bottles 9 weeks ago when my daughter was 2 weeks old and the sterilizer and a 3 pack of bottles are still unopened as I wash and sterilize after each feed and have no worries about actually remembering to switch on the sterilizer after loading it up. They are lots cheaper from Amazon if you are just buying bottles though. It was me who posted about problems with TT bottles if you click on my user name and look at previous posts you will find my post on the pregnancy thread relating to the problems we had.

As a retired midwife i would recommend the Dr Brown bottles. We used to use these in the NICU.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

We used the Dr Browns and they were brilliant and I would definitely use again.

Not tried the MAM ones though so if they're cheaper and as good then I could be swayed!

    I have a question...

Someone has bought us a Tommee Tippee steriliser, will we be able to use different bottles with this? I'm planning on buying the Medela bottles for expressing.

I would imagine so Gilly from previous experience my bottles have been sterilised in a different brand of steriliser. For example my NUK bottles went into an avent steriliser and later mothercares own electric seriliser (the Avent one kept breaking down) I would imagine its still the same now but will stand corrected if not :)
