Usually companies will bring a renewal quote down to the same level as a new customer if you ask them and are persuasive enough on the phone, but not always.

Churchill used to do this every year on my car insurance until a couple of years ago when they dug their feet in and said no. Now I'm with Aviva. It's very difficult to get a motor motor quote for them as a new customer because their website recognises that you are an existing customer. However, by searching for an identical car for sale on the web, and using those details, it is possible to get a new customer quote (although you can't buy it like that!).

So, you always get Quidco or TopCashback do you? Even though it states on the cashback sites "Cashback is paid to new customers only, renewed policies are not eligible"

The moneysaving way is not to "renew" via a cashback site, but start a brand new policy, when you do get the cashback!

You are both correct (thanks Quentin). As I said in my reply to the original OP thread, I've done this lots. It's NOT a renewal, it's a new policy. I was answering the OP's question: "Can I take out a policy as a new customer?" Yes, you can.

Ignore the renewal letters from the old insurance company (as I said before, unless you have a continuous direct debit, in which case phone to cancel that and say you are taking out the insurance with another company). You don't need to let the old insurance lapse, just do it in the usual way as a new customer.

Have always received the cashback and always received a better price. I obviously only do this when the current company is coming in cheaper than other insurance companies. Although there are a couple I wouldn't go with even if they were cheapest.

PS - have never had a problem with the company recognising me on the computer as an existing client.
PPS - Aviva has some super cashback deals going on, and their insurance was one of the cheapest. Am with them for car insurance this year, and will probably go with house insurance too.
