new customer the same insurer

I've just recieved my home insurance renewal quote. I've checked online & as a new customer to that same insurer the quote was £100 cheaper! Can I take out a policy as a new customer?

Normally yes, the odd one or two alledgedly won't let you, but I've never found them.
Have you shopped round generally, usually you'll beat that price as well by moving.
  • thanks, so do I just tell them I dont want to renew & go ahead with the quote I got online?
Yeah I did do a couple of comparison web sites. But the insurer im already with looked good for what it covers, my union discount & free home emergency. New customer quote was £125 for building & cont. It's actually £23 cheaper than what I paid last year.

You would probably have to let the cover lapse, then go with them. Name the company! usually they have three or four different trading names, so you just move, but are with the same company (if you love them and want to stay with them) :money:

So, is that like a Union insurance service? Do you really have to stick with them, or are you prepared to move for a better deal?

Why don't you just ring them and tell them your findings, whenever I've done this they just match it anyway. Call me cynical but I think they deliberately send you out a high quote hoping you'll just renew and make them more money.

I always do the cheapest that comes up with the comparison sites and then go with the cheapest* even if it's the same one I'm with. I don't wait for the first one to lapse, I just ignore their letters to renew (or phone to cancel if it's continuous direct debit). I wouldn't bother phoning them to match as I always get cashback as well from Quidco or TopCashback,

I agree with Karen24, the renewals are just a rip-off.

*Depending on service levels, of course - there are some companies I won't go with.

yes I agree the renewals R a ripoff. I don't normally renew. I was just wondering if i could do it as a new customer. I will look into it more tomorrow to see if I can beat that quote with the same level of cover.

experience08..... it's linked to my union website under union benefits. Uia can also b found using google, they have 25% off home insurance & free emergency cover at mo. It's not a union insurance we just get a lil discount on some things with being in the union at work. I got a lil discount on my mortgage rate thought it too.

thanks for your comment & suggestions :D

So, you always get Quidco or TopCashback do you? Even though it states on the cashback sites "Cashback is paid to new customers only, renewed policies are not eligible"

The moneysaving way is not to "renew" via a cashback site, but start a brand new policy, when you do get the cashback!
