Just remembered that Kirchdorf- see earlier post is not that far from Kitzbuhel, just a bus ride away. It means that anyone in the group who gets on fast with ski progress can take advantage of the 67kms of blue (beginner) runs & 79 km of red(intermediate) ones- 54 mountain lifts and gondolas. So you could stay on the nursey slopes in the village & intrepid family members could branch out!
I realised that skiing was not for me as I don't like heights but the mountains above Kitzbuhel with some very gentle slopes were just beautiful. Skiing is very hard on the knees- do lots of the recommended exercises beforehand.
In Kirchdorf walking distance to nursery slopes.
Austria is just lovely in the snow, so picturesque.

Ellmau in Austria is very good , lots of simple nursery slopes, very nice Agua centre,
There is a funicular railway to the mountain tops but not a scarey ride and a nice walk back down, About 45mins from Insbruck.0 -
Thank you for all those ideas, at least it gives me somewhere to startVisit beautiful Mid Wales:j0

I love Bansko, Bulgaria - I have stayed in Katarino Spa 4 times now, excellent. And I guess Bulgaria is not as expensive as Austria. Fabulous 4* Spa hotel, half board (food is just delicious!)- £400, ski rent+pass+tution 4hrs/6 days £120 beginners/£149 intermediate (yes, that's right!)
we booked through Crystal holidays, everything was just great.
PS we always go middle of January, so I guess in Christmas will be more expensive/busy, but then where it will be not?
£400 sounds good:jVisit beautiful Mid Wales:j0 -
My first ski trip was to Bulgaria Bovorets - really cheap, 4* hotel with a spa half board, quick 5-10 minute bus ride(no dodgy cliff edges), ski passes are cheap & there seemed to be a kids group. Nursery slope is fine, and there are a few green runs, and some of the blues were ok for first time skiing. I would definately have some lessons on a dry ski slope before you go, otherwise you'll spend even more time on the floor!0

You could also try the ski package at Centre Parcs Kempervennen in Holland. There is real snow in the snow dome.Lessons are booked as a package or individually and if you don't like it you have the usual centre parcs activities to keep everyone happy. It is also much cheaper to go abroad to centre parcs than it is to go to the UK version. We get cheap flights with Ryanair to Weeze airport and then get a private taxi. I know there is no spectacular scenery/mountains but it is definitely a fun introduction to skiing.0

I'd second this - lovely place to stay and no scary ride up. Really cheap to eat and drink on the mountain (in Ski terms) and quality good.
However, you will need to get on a chairlift at some stage -maybe even during the first week. If you can't cope with this, your ski career will be limited. At least Austria is great for the Apres-Ski and the During-Ski if you don't ski and your family are on the slopes.0
