I'll be fine on the slope as my feet would be on the ground:)

just don't go out drinking till 5am and then get up to get on the slopes for 7am. Or, like me, it won't be your feet on the ground.
I forgot that when snowboarding you slow down on your toe edge when facing up hill and heel edge when facing downhill. So i went toe edge when facing downhill which has the same effect as going downhill at about 40mph on a bike and hitting your front brake. Having your face jammed in the snow, then somersaulting a few times (bouncing off your face each time) doesn't half wake you up!! Apparently it looked that bad one of my mates stopped to see if i was ok instead of flying past laughing.
Fortunately it was still early and not many people saw it, so i escaped with my pride in tact... although i did exactly the same thing after about another 100 yards..

Seefeld in Austria. Lots of nursery slopes that you don't need cable cars to access and can walk to the bottom. Blue runs that you can get to either by a small lift or funicular railway. However, if you are going with someone who can ski, this isn't a great resort as it doesn't have much in the way of Black runs.

I was there for X-country skiing, but the downhill stuff did look very beginner friendly. I stayed at the SchonRuh hotel and it had 2 swimming pools and sauna and a spa. It was booked via Crystal Ski who were pretty decent. There was a girl who had booked a downhill tuition package who got freaked out by the slopes on the first day, so they swapped her onto the cross country group for no fee. Pretty decent of them.

If you fancy something a bit different you may want to consider Levi in Finland. Very cold but no high lifts etc, we took our 3 year old son to learn there and loved it. Ten minutes in easy bus transfer as well.

When I finally learned to ski many years ago I went to a delightful village in Austria called Kirchdorf which only has beginner slopes. It's not far from St Johann in Tirol. Just googled it and it says 1 hour transfer from Salzburg. The ski school was excellent.

  • My first skiiing holiday was in Mayrhofen, lovely gentle slopes if you want them, but better slopes too. Might have been a slightly dodgy coach ride there though! Sorry, can't recall details as it was a very long time ago! Just to say it is definitely worth looking into.

Alpbach, Great for first timers, shallow slopes, and more tricky ones if you're up for it at the end of the week.
Voted Austria's most beautiful Village also.

I love Bansko, Bulgaria - I have stayed in Katarino Spa 4 times now, excellent. And I guess Bulgaria is not as expensive as Austria. Fabulous 4* Spa hotel, half board (food is just delicious!)- £400, ski rent+pass+tution 4hrs/6 days £120 beginners/£149 intermediate (yes, that's right!)
we booked through Crystal holidays, everything was just great.

PS we always go middle of January, so I guess in Christmas will be more expensive/busy, but then where it will be not?
