Mobile data roaming
Im adding yet another one to the many that i have read about tonight.
I was in Spain for 2 weeks and called into an Orange shop before i went and was advised as long at the data roaming switched off would be ok. I ensured that was off but did go on most days to check fb and emails. So when i got the text that my orange bill was ready i didnt expect it to me £334!!!! I called today and they said that even when roaming off can still build up charges. Was told would speak to manager and call me back tonight between 730pm and 8pm but not had a call.
I dont want a lecture about not reading the handbook i just wanted some feedback from folk who have been successful getting this reduced, cant afford to pay this in one go, if i have too has anyone had a repayment arrangement made and if so can still use phone etc??
Also my network kept changing so doesnt seem to have charged when on orange but has charged me for Movistar and Orange Spain have detailed below.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated i realise will prob have to bite the bullet and eventually pay this just an:mad:noyed that i went in to shop and wasnt advised that could still potentially incurr large charges!!!
Thanks for your help
OrangeMobile internetdata 326.7907 £0.000
Spain MovistarMobile internetdata 89.0498 £227.362
Orange SpainMobile internetdata 1.8855 £4.814

I had to call Orange this morning as they didnt get back to me. As goodwill they will take £100 off the bill - there advise was to have a holiday and leave your phone at home, as it can still connect even when off!!! Very grateful for this but still a bit annoyed what do you pay an annual contract for if they tell you not to use it for your two week break. Some people have smart phones for pleasure and to use in there free time! He did say as i admitted to using it occasionally they could'nt wipe out all charge so its a very expensive lesson learned!!!0

What about this 50EUR cap? Can the OP not mention this to Orange?0

What are you talking about?! Grateful?! What goodwill? Can you read what I posted above?
If it was for data roaming mainly, they cannot charge you more than €50 per a calendar month for this.

Two things.
1. Grumbler is right - there is a cap for data use in the EEC. You MUST challenge this with them. see http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/activities/roaming/regulation/index_en.htm
However, as is typical with any legislation, I am a bit confused as to how Orange can send you a text saying you are getting near your limit if they have not received that information from the other network as per your billing breakdown.
2. You used your phone intermittently when over seas. When switched on, it could have used lots of data in the background. Remember that if you roam outside EEC.
Edit:-
Just read up a bit more on this. The EU direction demands that networks cut off data - with prior warning by text - when a user reaches £50 data use unless they have chosen to have a separate limit.
Now that's dead easy if your usage is given to Orange UK in real time, but if, for example, as in OP's case, most of the roaming was on Movistar, how are Orange able to notify OP by text until they have received notification from Movistar? I don't know the delay time, but in Orange's case, £50 is only 16 Mb roaming data in the EU.
So it seems very likely that OP was able to use more than his 16mb before Orange became aware and now they are trying it on by billing him for the data that he used over and above. And I be that Movistar's charging rate to Orange is nowhere near £3 per mb.
Regrettably, the EU legislation does not spell out what would happen in this situation as the politicians who framed this legislation seem to think that everything runs in real time !
However, their intent is clear - £50 cap regardless of how much data that buys. So OP, stand firm, refer Orange to the EU directive and demand that if their systems are incapable of monitoring your use in real time, that's not your fault and you will take this all the way if they don't credit everything above £50 (incl VAT).0 -
Hope the OP is still following this thread...0
