Precisely. In this sense its little different to the cash machines that charge you; there's other ways to get your cash and pay for things without ever having to use a chargeable machine, but its there and saves you walking further to get to a free machine.
Just the same your phone will still register the missed call, and either person can still call back later, or send a text.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
:rotfl: My nan tries to use her mobile like a walkie talkie, she wouldn't have a clue how to activate voicemail herself let alone send a text.
Voicemail benefits the older folk, I used to get people in my shop with 52 unread messages who wouldn't know how to check their missed call logs but they would know how to use voicemail.
What a lot of hot air over nothing!Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0 -
I think we skew here from the point:
The point here is that the default value is the voice mail is activated, about sneaky way to make money.
Some people do not bother to deactivate the voice mail as they do not pay for it, only the people who call them. It is fine as long as they need and want to use the voice mail but some do not bother to deactivate it and never retrieve the voice mail.
Some network providers automatically divert to voice mail after only three beeps, some are six beeps, you will never know where to stop it before you get charge 20p.
Here is the example where people who do not really need voice mail need to be stunk first before they know how to deactivate the voice mail.

The grandma from Miss Keith is another Example, hammy man on post#4 another example.
The receiving end never bother to hear the voice mail and people keep sending them get charged and did not aware about this.
I personally know a few people who receive voice mail all the time but never bother to retrieve it. Completely waste of money and resources ....
Allegedly many people which is including me got angry when I left a voice mail and later when I call them just happen to know that they never bother retrieve the voice mail. They do not deactivate the voice mail either because they do not want to spend time to find out or to learn the unnecessary thing, or because simply they do not bother because they do not pay for it.0 -
If they were really wanting to be sneaky and penny pinching, would they not have switched roaming "on" and message receipts "on" as well?
The point I asked you about what proportion of people that you call having voicemail set and, therefore, using it you have conveniently ignored. My money is on it being more than 90% and, therefore, the networks are catering for the majority.0 -

I didn't read either MissKeith's or Hammyman's posts as saying they didn't need voicemail. I believe you're making that up, as nobody is agreeing with you.0 -
Yep, definitely not agreeing with you. My nan both uses and needs voicemail as she does not know how to send or read her texts.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

Well, I personally know a few people who receive voice mail all the time but never bother to retrieve it. Completely waste of money and resources ....

Mobile phone companies are businesses, and they provide a number of services in exchange for providing these services. If you don't like these services, you always have the option of not using a mobile phone.

Lost interest now.
Can I have a deadlock letter please?0 -

Its usually a handset option how long it takes to divert to voicemail, so nothing to do with the network. And I'm not aware that you get charged just for someone being diverted to your voicemail, or for leaving a message. Not these days at least; you get charged when you call and listen to your message.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
If the OP didn't have 900+ posts, I'd say he was a troll. He's showing classic symptoms such as:
(a) using terms such as sneaky and unethical
(a) ignoring what people are saying
(b) making things up (e.g. other posters support him, even when they don't)
(c) trying to argue about something that is so trivial most (i.e. everyone but him) don't see any problem.
OP - given the standard of your English, is it possible you're not originally from the UK and are basing your (incorrect) assumptions on how mobile operators work in other countries? Before I get flamed, this is not a racist or xenophobic question - I'm just wondering if he's not fully aware of how mobile operators work in the UK.0
