Opinions of HSBC, in particular internet banking

Options
I'm thinking of switching my current account once I pay off my overdraft as I'm not entirely happy with my current bank, and am considering HSBC.

I was wondering I could get some opinions on HSBC banking in general, and specifically how good their online banking facilities are (as this is my preferred method of banking). Any information you can give me at all about your experience with this bank would be great. :)

Thanks in advance,

Apart from the keyring which p*sses me off, their internet banking is great.

"the worlds biggest bank" is certainly not the fastest at processing business accounts. On the plus side this could be that they are particular and pay attention to details as opposed to poor performance.

HSBC has the new key card login system which can be a pain ,but the online service is very good once in.

Moving money around ,overpaying the mortgage kind of thing is instant and all balances refresh instantly.

Payment to other banks is very fast and reliable.

I rate them very highly on-line.

Out of all the banks I've tried HSBC has been the best, I don't mind their secure key as all of the banks are currently implementing a similar system and if they haven't already they will. I've had great customer service from them and I've even gone through a Visa Debit Chargeback without any problems. Their online banking is extremely good and I've never had a faster payments transfer not arrive in someone's account almost immediately (unlike other banks).

Overall I think they're an excellent bank and their online facilities are one of the best.
  • I was a HSBC customer for 12 years and left about 5 months ago. I went to First Direct, ok its a division of HSBC but still night and day between the two, so much better. HSBC's internet banking is good i will give them that its well laid out and easy to use with good features but the customer service i experienced on the phone and in branch has declined considerably over the last 2 years so much so they irritated and put me off i switched and not looking back. First Direct all the way :)

I only bank online and have visited a branch maybe twice over the past 6 years. I have had no issues till date with their services, both online and Customer Care, though I agree with the previous post they have declined slightly over the past few years.

That being said, their service is reliable, all payment done on time and no hiccups, their fraud and security team are great really but sometimes you get a little tired due to instant checks if they get suspicious. Hell, they even called me twice and got my credit card replaced as they suspected its details have been compromised - though I never lost it - still I prefer this service than not being informed.

I also have a credit card though no rewards and a couple of savers though I dont use those a lot now. All in all, they are definitely one of the better banks outs there and their online features are wonderful

Surprised at that, I have to say that I walked in off the street and walked out with account number, internet and telephone banking all set up.

On the business account side of things, its internet banking is ok but dont think it is the most intuitive interface - could be better for personal customers

For those people who hate calling banks whether because of the overzealous security procedures or expensive numbers, I really like HSBCs secure messages. Someone has always responded within 1 day and sorted things out. I haven't needed to visit a branch except to pay in cash for several years.

Santander also has this feature but the people who answer the messages get things wrong and don't understand the concept of grammar and punctuation , though the branch staff aren't much better, lol.

I had to wait 2 hours but compared to the other horror stories I've heard it was a breeze.

    I doubt it.

They made us suffer with a secure key thing first.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Well trying to open a Barclays account took 5 visits and about 3 weeks. Most of the visits was due to their zeal over share certificates as they wanted exact wordings in either a letter or certs and even their own template didnt match their wording requirements.

HSBC on the other hand just check Companies House for the share issuance and didnt need to see any papers at all other than my personal proof of identity.
