You have been a victim of mis-sselling as you were promised a "credit" card which entails a "credit" balance.

Ring up one of the many companies out there (check they are Ministry of Justice approved) and claim your compensation!

I thought the "minimum payment" on my credit card bill was all I had to pay to write it off

Perhaps every time she got the card out to use it, as she handed it over she should have snatched it back and said "can't use this one, it's in the wrong name...."
