If you're just trying to see if he takes to it then this would be a good starter kit - and the base plate is included. Some of the other ones in the same price range don't have a base plate. If he loves it then shop around and wait for deals before buying bigger sets or you'll spend a fortune. Also keep boxes/instructions as when he grows out of it the resale value is pretty good.0 -

and a couple of baseplates to begin to build a wall or house!
I think to start with the small sets like the police car, boat etc are just enough.

Thank you both its really helpfull. There are so many lego sets I just didnt know where to begin really. The starter set looks a good one, but I think I will go for the bigger one so that he can sit with his daddy and build more items.
He is not really a wee boy who will play himself he needs you to play with him. In saying that I have noticed recently he has started to play with the car mat and diggers he got for xmas so think it may be the start of him wanting to play more hopefully.
Hopefully he will love it0 -

Also for a starter kit, stick to Lego City. The other bits are lovely but are all usable with the city bits and pieces!!
Heres to many years standing on lots of little Lego pieces!!“Listen earnestly to anything your children want to tell you, no matter what. If you don't listen eagerly to the little stuff when they are little, they won't tell you the big stuff when they are big, because to them all of it has always been big stuff.”0 -

Just been through hell with debenhams online sending lego out in just their mailing bags - box all squashed on arrival twice, we then rang a local store to collect the set travelled 20 miles to collect it and guess what they'd sellotaped a piece of paper with our name on to the box - on removing ripped it!!! told them to refund it, strongly worded complaint to debenhams and have received a £25 gift voucher in the post today for the hassle caused0 -

Good for you! FYI Toys Are Us also send out their Lego orders in mailing bags. Before Christmas I ordered the Police Station and the Camper Van, they had taped the boxes together and just put them in a bag! So arrived a bit battered but I very carefully just cut the (clear) tape to separate the boxes and left some of the tape stuck on rather than rip it off and damage the boxes even more. Was fine for a pressie for DD but no good if you were expecting pristine boxes.
